Amidst The Colors Of Fall

Taken on 9-15-2009 during the second day of our spontaneous road trip to Haines, Alaska. It was around 9 AM and 28 degrees out, on Highway 1 headed towards Tok, AK., just before the the Slana River. Rick happened to notice the two immature swans in the pond, there was no place to pull over so Rick continued down the road a short distance and turned around at the lodge, then we headed back towards the pond. Since there were no pull offs, he literally pulled off the road, amongst all the brush … (was a bit of a shock to me since we were in the Acadia and not the truck … shock is forgotten as there were photos to be taken). Between the pond reflections of the fall colors and the young swans, it was a photo op that we couldn’t resist (we were surprised that there were no adult swans in the same pond) ... HOPEFULLY these two young swans make it through their migration out of Alaska to their wintering grounds.

Beautiful colors and reflection…..Stunning capture and it looks so peaceful and tranquil : ) Love it !!
Rick & Deb Larson replied
Hi Sean THANKS SO VERY MUCH!! The colors were really awesome (this image does not do … what we saw with our eyes … justice), and the added bonus of the two juvenile Trumpeter Swans just made the moment. Don’t know where the adults were and why these two were by themselves, I really HOPE that they are both okay and on their way to their wintering grounds. Thanks again and Take Care ~ Deb ~ ☺
Lori Peters
A stunning capture. I love all the fall colors. We are expecting snow tomorrow. xo
Rick & Deb Larson replied
THANKS SO VERY MUCH dear friend, it was much prettier then my image depicts it!! Fairbanks had it’s first snowfall earlier this week, don’t know when we will receive ours (I would prefer it to hold off, but Father Nature is not going to appease me, lol … I’m not ready!!). Hopefully you don’t get too much. Thanks again and take Care ~ Deb ~ ☺

Such warm hues, Deb, and such young swans. Trumpeter swans? You drove all the way to Haines on a whim? We need to get a conveyance similar to yours.
Rick & Deb Larson replied
Hey Jan THANKS SO MUCH!! Yes, immature Trumpeter Swans. LOL, yep … 720 miles each way. We left on the 14th, overnighted in Gakona (as we were on the road headed out of Wasilla at 4:30 PM) checked out of the cabin in Gakona at 7 AM on the 15th, back on the road to Haines … arrived in Haines at 9 PM. We then left Haines on Friday the 18th, checking out of the hotel by 8 AM, got breakfast then started homeward … this time we drove straight through, arriving home at around 1:30 AM Saturday the 19th as we wanted to take in the Bird TLC Raptor walk that they were having at Kincaid Park sometime that day (we only heard about the Raptor walk via a cell phone call from our daughter, on Monday the 14th as we were on the road to Haines). I did a write up (with photos) about the walk (trying to get the word out about Bird TLC and trying to garner a little support for them) ... if you want to check it out. I am thinking about during a writing with photos, from our road trip to Haines … I just need to get my notes together, do a draft and see how it reads. Thanks again and Take Care my friend ~ Deb ~ ☺

Nanagahma
Awe, nice find. How can you determine if they are young or older swans? (I don’t know about these things. . . just curious). Looks like fall has hit you faster than it has hit us. I’m still waiting for fall color. Very pretty photo.
Rick & Deb Larson replied
Hi Sandy THANKS SO MUCH for the visit and very kind comment, so greatly appreciated!! The immature Trumpeter swans/first year are gray in color with the pinkish bills, while the adults are pure white with black bills. Fall has not only hit, it is disappearing, lol … I’m afraid that it won’t be long before I am shoveling the white stuff < I’m frowning here. > Thanks again my friend and Take Care ~ Deb ~ ☺
Angel Gold
Wonderful colour
Rick & Deb Larson replied
THANKS Angel, it was such a gorgeous morning … and spotting the two immanture swans was a bonus … then to have the beautiful fall colors reflected on the water made it even better. Take Care ~ Deb ~ ☺
Marita Sutherlin
Brrrrr…28F??? We’ve had a coldfront here and it’s finally 77F, we’ve had the hottest summer on record here in Houston. On second thought 28F sounds fantastic :D..You should be thrilled with these awesome fall colours, Deb, and such wonderful reflections. And then throw in the swans – and you have a perfect shot! Hey guys we’re routing for you, all hoping you find your way and survive the trip!! Marita
Rick & Deb Larson replied
Hi Marita THANKS AGAIN for stopping by ... it really is great having you here on RB … (almost feels like old home week, lol with all the ex webshoters here on RB). The photo doesn’t really do the actual scene that we witnessed, but it is close enough for me. Thanks also for cheering on the swans … hopefully they are safely ensconced in their winter grounds at this moment … fingers crossed. Thanks again and Take Care ~ Deb ~ ☺
Barbara Burkhardt
Love the reflected colours and bonus swans or is that V/Versa – Wonderful image … Lucky you living around such diversity. B-)
Rick & Deb Larson replied
Oh Barb, it was the swans that caught Rick’s eye as we drove by … the added bonus was the lovely fall colors that reflected all around them. THANKS SO VERY VERY MUCH my dear friend!! Take Care ~ Deb ~ ☺
Beve Brown-Clark
O fabulous capture, young ones…I so enjoy seeing these guys…most excellent! I can tell you did too!!
Rick & Deb Larson replied
Oh Beve, We hadn’t seen a lot of swans this year, so coming across the ones that we did while on the road trip was such a bonus, especially the number of young ones (these two we have no idea why they were alone … just hope that they made the migration okay). THANKS SO VERY VERY MUCH my friend!! Hugs and Take Care ~ Deb ~ ☺
Ana Belaj

Rick & Deb Larson replied
THANKS SO VERY MUCH dear friend, truly appreciated!! Swans (any type of wild life is always a show stopper for us, but I was amazed at the reflection of the beautiful fall colors … although this image does not do the actual scene we witnessed … justice). Thanks again and Take Care ~ Deb ~ ☺
