This shot of the South side of Denali (aka Mt. McKinley) was taken on Friday 9-04-2009. It was taken from the Petersville Road area in Trapper Creek, Alaska. It is a rare sighting to see all of McKinley exposed to full view, sometimes you might just see the very peak, or a portion of the middle and sometimes (which is most of the time) you just don’t see the mountain at all. It is proabably easier to count the number of days that it is in full view then the number of times it is not.

(Rick had initially wanted to go up to Hatcher Pass – via the Willow route – which allowed us to see that McKinley was in full view … at that point plans changed – as I wanted to chase after photos of McKinley – so we found ourselves heading farther North to gather more shots of this rarely viewed mountain).

“McKinley aka Denali which is Athabaskan for ‘The Great One’ is one of the many peaks located in the Alaska Range which runs east to west across the southcentral area of Alaska, thus creating a devide between the tributaries of the Yukon River system and those that drain south into the Pacific Ocean. The Alaska Range is part of the Pacific Ring Of Fire – the Denali Fault runs along the southern edge of the range – there are no volcanoes located in this mountain range – McKinley is approximately 20,320 feet, it is the tallest peak in North America, and is large enough to create it’s own localized weather which is more severe here than anywhere else in the world.”
Above info was gathered via the internet on 9-05-2009 from Peakware – World Mountain Encyclopedia and Alaska range – Wikipedia.

Mt. McKinley is the highest mountain in the US, I think. We live 14 miles from Pikes Peak and it is 14,100 feet. Th snow capped peak is so beautiful! Alaska is an awesome place. A wonderful picture. xo
Rick & Deb Larson replied
THANKS SO VERY MUCH Lori ... yes it is the tallest peak in the U.S. It is unpredictable as it makes it’s own weather, thereby is rare to see it in all it’s glory as we did yesterday. We’ve lived up here for almost 32 years now and we can honestly say that we have probable only seen it fully exposed like this about a dozen times. Thanks also for the fave, much appreciated!! (Rick said that I should add that this image is not as sharp as he had wished it was as there was a bit of a haze, most likely from the wild fires near Fairbanks). Hope that you are having a SAFE and FUN weekend. Take Care ~ Rick & Deb ~ :)

What a beautiful capture of this amazing mountain. Always wanted to see it in person but havent had the chance as of yet. One day soon I hope. Wonderful write up too…..thanks so kindly for sharing this one !!
Rick & Deb Larson replied
Hi Sean THANKS SO VERY MUCH, your kindness is truly appreciated!! If and when you get the opportunity to venture North to Alaska plan lots of time, there have been people that have vacationed up here for a two week period and never once got to see Mt. McKinely in view as the mountain was weathered in, and please let us know if and when you get the chance to visit our great state. Take Care ~ Rick & Deb ~ :)
Rick & Deb Larson replied
Rick thought that I should add that although it is true that others have missed out on seeing Mt. McKinley while they’ve been here, that that does not necessarily mean that you wouldn’t be able to see it. AL-TI-TUDE could also translate to AT-TI-TUDE ~ guess one could say the mountain definitely has lots of that by way of weather displays which shroud the entire mountain in clouds.

There are wildfires near Fairbanks? Do you have any more information on this? I can google it. I have many dear friends in the area of Fairbanks and North Pole so now I am concerned. I hadn’t heard about it until I saw your notes above and will now be sending emails and making calls tomorrow. This is a beautiful image.
Rick & Deb Larson replied
Hi Sharon, There were three major fires (among many others) going on this year and at one point the three fires converged on each other in the Nanana area, which encompassed over 250,000 acres (if memory serves me) ... this year has been really bad, very hot and dry … it not only affected the interior but there was also a major fire going on the Kenai Peninsula. THANKS SO MUCH!!! Take Care and we hope that none of these fires affected the areas where your friends live. ~ Rick & Deb ~ ☺
Sharon Mau
I know exactly where Murphy Dome is. Here is the current story on the forest fire near Fairbanks Alaska
Rick & Deb Larson replied
Sharon, Did you ever get the chance to do a little side trip to the Chatanika area (also mentioned in the above article that you referenced … outside of Fairbanks), Rick and I have gone there a few times, it’s (or was … depending on if the fire affected it or not) a BEAUTIFUL area with lots of history (especially the gold rush), there is an old dredge that sits right where it stopped … hopefully it remains untouched by the fires. We are also very familiar with Murphy’s Dome and of course China Hot Springs and Circle, we have also been to those areas at one time or another as we used to go North to the Fairbanks area a lot during the summer months (now it’s the Kenai that has claimed us for the summer months). Take Care ~ Rick & Deb ~ ☺
Sharon Mau
Goldstream! Oh no!! This is terrible, this is or was such a beautiful pristine area. I am so sorry to learn about the fires. I know I am using your beautiful image as a blog, but the fires are so distressing. What I just read on the Miner news is very disturbing. And it seems there are many more in the state with such a dry season. “Seventy-nine fires are active throughout the state, including 13 that are being actively fought. Nearly 2.5 million acres has burned so far this year, according to the Alaska Interagency Coordination Center”
Rick & Deb Larson replied
Sharon I don’t know if we are familiar with the Goldstream area, is that North of Fairbanks? No problem turning this into a blog, we’re just sorry that you hadn’t heard about all the fires that have wreced havoc on Alaska this year, this year the state had to bring firefighters from the lower 48 into Alaska to help fight our fires instead of us sending ours out of state to help fight theirs. The smoke form these fires just seemed to be hanging around forever, and even as far away as we live from Fairbanks … there were days that if you went outside the smoke and smell from those fires was so pronounced. One would think that this year is going to one that goes down in the record books as an historic year when it comes to fire destruction. Thanks again and Take Care Dear Friend and we hope that you were able to make contact with all your friends and that they and their families are all okay. ~ Rick & Deb ~ ☺
