I am patting myself on the back as I recognised this instantly as being Canadian. Are you a First Nation Canadian? I have cousins in BC and I take an interest in Canadian art. I wrote to a Haida member recently, asking if he’d mind me doing a tribute painting to Haida art and he was really annoyed and said the Haida are sick of people stealing everything from them. I hadn’t meant any harm, but I guess I better respect his feelings, so I won’t be doing any Haida art. shame … ‘cos it’s great. I’ll have a look at the rest of your work now.

Before I look at the rest, I am no wondering if your influence is Ojibwe or Haida … all will no doubt be revealed when I read your profile, which maybe I should have done in the first place … haha.

Woodland Cree Art is this particular “style” and the most famous of these artists died just before C;mas, his name was Norval Morriseau – google him. And I would be honoured if someone copied me as would Mr. Morriseau. Maybe he thought you were talking about certain symbols which are taboo for anybody including said person. You could still paint “Haida” just put or add your touch to it so it’s not Spiritual or religious or ceremonious.
I am Plains Cree from the central interior of western Canada and my styles are many. i used to go through galleries but all wanted me to paint for them and what they thought was good (and commercial). I quit the galleries ‘bout 7 years ago.

that takes courage Arnold and if the world is to change toward respect for mother earth, why compromise as most of the world’s population have already. well done.

This is very beautiful. My husband is Assiniboine, and they were more influenced culturally by the Cree than their Sioux cousins. I’ll have to ask him if their art is like this. I think your style is even more beautiful than the Crow paintings that I’ve seen.

I forgot to add that my husband and I have had similar experiences with galleries and stopped dealing with them years ago. They wanted to micromanage every part of the painting process.

  • Arnold Isbister replied

thank you very much. we have been influenced by the Assiniboine too so I guess it works both ways :-)
