I have, for many months, been toying with the idea of using old CDs for art. With the popularity of iPods, MP3 players, USB storage devices etc, the compact disc is starting to be less used, but there are still billions of them in existence.
I have had old back up discs from work, music CDs that I didn’t ever use, old scratched CDs, old computer program CDs that are now obsolete all hanging around in boxes cluttering up the house, and have recently started using them as a surface to create art!
was the first, and I have now completed another three in various media which I will be uploading shortly. (to see them on Facebook click here )
I have so far used gesso on all the cds as a base, then tried fineliner, watercolour crayon, watercolour pencil, gouache and textas, and intend to try other things too.
This has been such a fun project, and I’ve been greatly inspired by the fascinating hubcap project that Karin Taylor is involved in ( click here to see her journal entry regarding this great project)
So now I am looking for other artists to get involved too! Do you want to have a go at creating art from CDs? It can be ANYTHING. Paint on it? Collage on it? Make it into sculpture? use it some way in photography? You are only limited by your own imagination!
Title of this project (kindly provided by Anni Morris, thank you) is now THINK OUTSIDE THE CIRCLE
Let’s use and create rather than turning to rubbish! If I can get enough people interested in having a go at this project, I will start a group here on RB for it, and also in time a Facebook page.
Who knows? With enough interest we could have a global exhibition!
So let me know in the comments section below if you’re interested :)
Also, if (for some unusual reason) any of you DON’T have old, useless CDs lying around, let me know, happy to post some to you!
