Lily/Lotus - Watercolour Pencil

Watercolour Pencil on Watercolour Paper

I was inspired by a fellow RBer to do an exercise whereby you draw or paint the same image in 5 or 6 different media. My original Waterlily/Lotus drawing in coloured pencil is one I was very pleased with, i loved the image and colours, and so I have now done a series of 6 paintings/drawings of this image. It was really great to challenge and extend myself by using different media especially those I was not familiar with using.
This one is in Watercolour pencil.
I would love your feedback on all six of these paintings, which do you like best? Why?

I like this one, the colours and textures are so lovely. It has a floaty look but is still strongly coloured. What a great idea about the different media thing!!!!

For some reason I was drawn to this one first….probably the richness of the colors, especially the deep violet color. I love lotus flowers though and all of these are gorgeous!!!

  • Alexandra Felgate replied

Thank you very much MoonSpiral! I agree the depth of colour in this one is attractive, probably my favourite in the series. Thrilled you like it xx

    this one jumped at me,
maybe the translucent nature of the watercolour, the deep colour in background…

  • Alexandra Felgate replied

Thanks you so much Danita! This is the only one I have actually framed, its hanging in my bedroom at the moment….very pleased you like it too! (I love that translucent effect you get with watercolour pencils)

ahhh! so this is what watercolor pencil is SUPPOSED to look like. absolutely beautiful. i love the contrast of the flower to the surroundings, and the focal point is uplifting. i figured out my error – not using watercolor paper. :/ whodathunk?

  • Alexandra Felgate replied

Thanks for your kind comment Lee! Certainly using watercolour paper or something with a good rough texture makes watercolour pencil much easier to use!! You gain more control over what you are doing. I only use very cheap watercolour sketchbooks, but they still give a good result! Keep playing with them, I’d very much like to see your work with them continue!!

I think this one is my fave, and the gouache one. They have a stained glass feel about them. Now do a collage one :-P

  • Alexandra Felgate replied 13 days ago

I’ve come to the conclusion its my favourite too! Glad you like the gouache one as well, as I felt it wasn’t very well handled (its an unfamiliar medium for me!) so that makes me feel quite chuffed!!
Ooh, a collage one, what a marvellous idea!!!!!!!! That is now definitely on my list of works to do…..thanks!!!!
