Extremeties

It’s ok if you hand my heart
back -
I’m glad I put it out there.
I never do that.

Usually, I keep it
to myself
and it beats
in my chest
just to survive;
to send blood
to my organs
and my extremeties
and my ears
where I can hear it,
and it’s as deafening
as water rushing.

I need an engineer
to build a dam.

    Don’t we all?

I see the wisdom in the first stanza, but it still makes me clutch my arms across my chest in protection. Your words always elicit a strong reaction from me, Luke, and I couldn’t ask for more from writing.
