Learning Through Art – 2010 Kroger Cincinnati Snaps Winner

Just 3 days ago, Ava (9 years old) and I were at Khron Conservatory (in Cincinnati, Ohio) enjoying the butterfly exhibit. On our way out, we were told that a baby robin had just fallen far from its nest in a tall tree above. I rushed over and found a stunned lil’ guy. Near by him was a ghastly sight. A dead baby bird with its innards all strewn about. My mothering “Dr. Doolittle” instincts immediately took over, and since there was no way to return it to its nest and no bird mother around to protect it, I crouched down, cupped my hands and asked for it to come to me for safety. The wee one hopped right into my hands without hesitation. Ava and I took him home, wrapped him in hand towels and looked up online instructions on how to raise an orphaned Robin. A trip to the pet store later and we were ready with an abundance of mealworms, an eye dropper for water and a small cage (cannot let our cats near him!). At first he was not interested in eating, but now he gobbles up grub every two hours. We give him exercise outside and lots of TLC. He loves being held. If we place him on the ground, he hops to us right away and either nestles back in our hands or snuggles up next to our legs as we sit cross legged near by. He is an absolute delight, such a treasure to behold. He takes his worms from our fingers and sucks on our fingers as he inhales the meals that squirm vigorously within his throat. I have never had any up close and personal experience with birds wild or no, so this has been incredible. We plan to keep him until he is mature enough to handle the great outdoors without risk of meeting an untimely death. We named him Billy. Billy The Bird. And we simply adore our Billy!

  • Thank you so very much for your fantastic comment and dear favorite! Actually, we are not sure if it’s a boy or girl yet, but I tend to refer to the baby as him for some reason. :)
