Artist's Description

Quote taken from cincinnatienquirer.com

*In 2010, there have been 622 gun-involved crimes in Cincinnati, resulting in 167 people being shot. That’s 10 more than were hurt or killed by this point last year, and city leaders say a spate of freezing days in February kept that month relatively quiet compared to years past.

“I don’t understand the thinking,” Powers said after court. “It seems like any more the way to resolve a dispute is you get a gun and shoot somebody. That needs to change.”*

I discovered this rotting out sign recently, while driving downtown in the crime-ridden area of Over The Rhine. Much has been done to revamp this desolate part of town. Areas of it are being refurbished in hopes of a renaissance. When I was a little girl, it was a treat to get all dressed up in your Sunday best and enjoy an afternoon strolling, shopping and dining in our beloved city central, downtown Cincinnati. Today, the streets are teeming with an odd mix of businessmen and women in their suits and briefcases alongside vagrants who while away their days on front stoops, park benches, anywhere they can find a place to gather and go about their form of business. I am proud to have grown up in this beautiful city, yet so sad to see what’s become of it through the years. I applaud the efforts to better our community, to safeguard our citizens and find some way out of the chaos. I consider myself lucky in that my family and I live in peaceful neighborhoods, far from the explosive sounds of gunshots and sirens, death and mayhem. But crime can happen anywhere… at anytime… we must be aware, smart and never become lulled in to thinking we are immune.

I captured this image while sitting in my car. I was afraid to get out in order to get a clearer image that wouldn’t have the windshield between me and it, because the man who kept wandering in and out of this building (at first I thought it was a garage or a storage area, but it is apparently his home, thus his homemade sign) glared at me repeatedly. So I took 2 pictures and split. I commend this one little man with his rundown junkyard looking home for offering up a ray of hope in the form of a powerful suggestion…
