House For Sale

Took a drive downtown today to the sad part of our city and was struck by this boarded up shanty home. The neighborhood was extremely dicey, even in broad daylight at noon. I barely stepped out of my car, keeping one foot on the door frame, in order to get the shot and get away without being shot. So truly disheartening. But I had to try to capture this image, it needed to be documented. I was drawn to the graffiti someone scrawled on the boarded front door. The plea took my breath away…

An Open Poem To The World

To all those in the world today
Without enough to eat,
Be it body that needs nourishment
Or empty soul, so weak.
If I could take away your pain
Cook endless banquet feasts,
Or a hug to hold you as you wept
I’d be there til pain ceased.
Because it breaks my heart
To see a child suffer,
Or a friendless elder all alone
No love to be the buffer.
So I try to make a difference
In any way I can,
I try to be the gentle hearth
That warms their frigid hands.
I am no cockeyed optimist
I know the world is broken,
And thinking one can make it whole
Is nothing but a token.
But what if there were others…
Like-minded as I am?
Maybe we’re not perfect,
But perfectly we’d stand.
If all of us would take the time
To offer up some bread,
Or a shoulder strong and sturdy
To comfort someones head…
Just maybe it’d be different
Just maybe we could see,
A world we’d all be proud of
How amazing that would be!
