The runway at RAF Fairford runs 2 miles from East to West. Here at the West End, gear up and the Red Arrows still feel in touching distance as they fly low, departing for Silverstone where the British Formula 1 Grand Prix was held at the same weekend as RIAT 2012.

My pictures are taken with a Sony DSC-HX1. What you see is pretty much what comes from the memory card, with maybe a touch of rotation and or cropping.
I probably wouldn’t be taking so many pictures if it weren’t for the camera. It has been worth every penny as it has captured some great memories since I got it in 2009.
Feel free to comment on any of the pictures. I’m all for learning how to improve.

With that perspective, were you in a plane also? Great shot.

  • I was at the west end of the runway on the ground. They had basically lifted off and taken gear up but maintained a low level of flight for the remainder of the two mile length of the runway, climbing up just a fraction of a second after this was taken. I’ve never been at this end of the runway at Fairford before, I had previously been at the east end where they enter on to the runway from one of two taxi ways and hold before take off they also return to land at that east end of the runway. They’re generally moving quite a bit slower down east and so are easier to capture. I had ventured up to the west end because the sun had come out and a B-2 Spirit was parked up there, which had previously been under cloud cover and my pictures of it had been awful. You can get plenty exercise at RIAT for sure.

i don’t know how i missed seeing this! congrats on the features. this is a fabulous shot…. i wish i could see as many aircraft as you seem to capture on virtual film… okay, either it’s planes or cows, and i’ll gladly take the….. ;)

  • It’s just the one airshow a year I go to at RAF Fairford. The largest military air show in the world just happens to be in the UK. Farnborough is also good for the civillian stuff and the star of the show there is always the A380. Farnborough is every 2 years though and this years was very disappointing.
