Mumbai, city of contrasts
Mumbai is a fascinating, colourful and noisy city, full of life 24 hours a day.
I wanted to see what the real city was like; not the sanitised version with concrete and glass for the modern businessman; not the Bombay of the Raj; but where the real people were, those who were obliged to live in what has often been described as Asia’s largest slum.
This photograph highlights the contrast beetween the slum areas and their juxtaposition with the new concrete jungle.
Thankfully there are plans under way, albeit controversal, to rehouse many of the poorest residents. Of course, the driver is probably big business wanting the real estate in the city centre, rather than a desire to reduce poverty, but hey, that’s progress, isn’t it?

wonderful capture of old Bombay. The more affluent they become the more the slums get worse and the people poorer, they wouldn’t dream of sharing it out a bit. Bombay and Calcutta were the two worst places we saw. You have made a wonderful job of this capture, the high and the low literally. hugs xxx
