There are two water mills on the river Churnet at Cheddeton, 3 miles south of Leek in North Staffordshire and just on the outskirts of the Peak District. This is the one attached to te north mill which was built as a Flint mill, in the late 18th century. The flint was ground by the mills and then sent via the nearby Caldon Canal to the pottery factories of Stoke-on-Trent, where it was used in earthenware pottery. The mills are grade II listed buildings and are run by a trust and are open to the public. There is a small museum with cottage kilns, a canal boat and steam engines.
A plaque by the wheel informs us that the type of wheel is a ‘Lower Breast Shot’ meaning that the water fills or strikes the buckets below the water wheel shaft. The materials used are cast iron and oak with larch boards. It develops 12hp.
The mill complex includes two separate water mills, a miller’s cottage, two flint kilns, a drying kiln and outbuildings.
