Shamful how this wonderful industry has been allowed to collapse. I chatted one day in the Gladstone to exworkers of Doulton and Wedgewood and others, who did displays and demo’s part time. Great skills wasted. The only salvage now is nostaliga and tourists. That would be a great project to record as much as you can before it disappears. Good luck. Steve
Thanks Steve, there were hundreds of potbanks producing everything from the finest china to earthenware tiles. Only a few remain.
This reminds me of a couple of skittles for ten pin bowling. A lovely photograph. This is one of the many areas in England that I have never visited. Looks like I will now make the effort. Cheers Wiggy
You should come! We have everything around us. The Peak District, a couple of preserved railways, The Potteries, canals and even :( Alton Towers

I love the shapes of these old kilns the ones at the potteries museum in Stoke just amaze me , the way they’re built!
No two are alike and each potbank had its own design. My dad used to be a placer for bottle kilns just before the war.

Really! Tricky and very skillful job. my wife is a potter and we are both members of the potteries museums.
I live just a few miles away from the Gladstone Museum, and about half a mile from these two kilns.
I’m trying to capture all the remaining bottles before thay are lost or just surrounded.

These are beautiful. I love the days when things were made of all natural materials instead of fiberglass or worse… plastic
Thank you Judith, Sadly they knocked the factory they belonged in and built modern apartments all around,

Marvelous shot!
Cheers, glad you enjoy the bottles

Very interesting. Like the brick and the shapes. We’ve nothing like it here.
The bottle shape was designed for the best firing – my father worked in these type of kilns for many years
