When important ships arrive, we send sprays of water skyward to
celebrate and the magic of the harbour reminds us of why we love this
place. When important dignitaries arrive, we turn water cannons on
protesters, because we can, and we speak the name of “terror” behind
our hands for fear we will be mistaken for free citizens. Best just to
stay home that day and leave the streets to those who dream of nations
and disasters and power in the folds of flags. Best to turn our backs
on the puffed up daemons and go about our civil lives.
