There is no deciphering
the calligraphy of the laburnum
that lately I cut down
and rooted out.

Its black trunk pretended
strength and the scribbling arms
made up gestures at night
that might be copied in search
of a diagram of love.

It is for burning now,
this Sunday.

Thank you Heike – it came from a dream – and then, thanks to the Internet, I was able to trace references to Ted Hughes and Silvia Plath that I had forgotten but my dreams obviously had not.

Excuse my ignorance, but who are Ted Hughes and Silvia Plath ?

Sorry – they are very well known poets from the late 20th century. They were famously married – she killed herself and many people blamed him. They both wrote about laburnum trees.
