Now it is raining and birds hunch on dark branches and wonder.
Down the hill, a few paper boats pass in flooded gutters.
A school boy shows a younger child the art and
hurries to see how many have arrived
in the retention pond at the end of the street.
My shoes are wet through and I don’t care.

This one was published as a Letter to the Editor in either the Sydney Morning Herald or the Australian, after our drought broke. (I can’t remember which paper at the moment).
