Yes ! I’m very new to it all , but gradually finding my feet ; my main problem was with installing programmes that i’d imported ; i’ve got round this by installing ‘wine’ , which enables you to install programmes made for the windows platform . I also use the debian repository . To do this , i simply key the name of the software i’m looking for in my browser , with .deb after it ; i’ve got ‘apophysis7’ + ‘incendia’ running , also ‘mandlebulb3d’ ; ‘structure-synth’ is actually in the ubuntu software centre , but for some reason it’s not installing for me ! I’ve had one or two hitches like this , but i tend to get them ironed out ! With ‘incendia’ running on ‘wine’ , i’m having to open the programme twice , because an error screen comes up – if i double-click the icon on the launch panel it opens twice + once i close the ‘error’ box , one interface is still open ! Otherwise it is running superbly on ubuntu ; the only other problem i have is with accessing the ‘editor’ options ; to get round this , i go first to ‘transformations’ where the ‘load’ button is usually visible , after opening the file browser and then closing it again , the panel seems to shake and the controls are open ! Once ‘transformations’ is open , i go to ‘baseshapes’ again + it is now ok too ! Basically it’s a bit of switching around like this that gets it going , but no great problem , the stability of the programme isn’t threatened , no danger of crashing ! Noticing all the new additions on 1.5 , which is looking splendid ! I especially look forward to trying out importing .obj’s ! Now that i have incendia again , i can start doing textures + backgrounds again too ; that’s another thing i like about the programme , the fact that i can spend time doing things like this ! I find ‘twisted brush’ to be the best app. for textures ; i found from experience that i got the best results from textures that were cubic , instead of elipsed , on the 256×256 ; i’ve also found that completely symmetrical patterns work best – ‘twisted brush’ is ideal for this , the ‘carpet’ option in ‘distort’ makes any image symmetrical (with x + y sliders) ; there’s also ‘kaleidoscope’ + ‘patterniser’ options , as well as loads of quality available patterns to generate , xs bump maps , and tons of other effects ! I find it relaxing to make textures , i hunt the web for anything and everything i could use ! I wondered a while back about enquiring regarding having a repository on incendia/3-d fractals for uploading things like textures ; i thought it would be a way that i could make myself useful , but i’m loath to make demands on anyone that might already have enough to do ! (i’ll try and drop a suggestion sometime)
All in all , the fractals cache i’ve got now isn’t bad . I’ve got two other flame generators ‘fyre’ + ‘qosmic’ (.debs) , also xaos (software centre) ‘fractal4d’ (adobe air app.-.deb) + ‘gnofract4d’ ! So , getting there ! I think ‘fraqtive’ + ‘xfractint’ are also available , but to get these programmes running i believe you need the ‘kubuntu’ desktop , which can be installed , again via the ‘software centre’ , + set-up as a ‘partition’ ; this is a concept i’m becoming familiar with since installing ubuntu – the fact that you can have two or even three different desktops on the go at one time ! This is what you are doing if you install ubuntu alongside windows , although i’d advise anyone not to do this , because it’s subsequently a problem to uninstall windows later ; i think the best idea is to switch completely (if someone had a mind to switch at all) , just remember to back up files + accept that you’re starting all over again ! I had the two running alongside on my netbook , all that happened was the bugs were pouring in from windows side ! You have to use ubuntu on it’s own i’d say to fully appreciate it ! Anyone might believe that the application itself was at fault ! I found this to be the case when i was using windows – you were led to think that an app. was at fault , when it was just that same old bug machine again ! This was one of many reasons that i really had to say goodbye to microsoft !
‘Kubuntu’ + it’s ‘kde’ desktop is best for graphics i think , it’s a job pending for me , to install it ! The graphics apps. for ubuntu are all top quality , it’s just that there’s not a great emphasis on fractals ; modelling progs are really good (blender , k3d , misfit3d , open office draw – others also in software centre) ; ‘gimp’ runs as smooth as a mercedes , then there’s ‘inkscape’ + ‘xara xtreme’ for vectors . Really , i think the line between 2d and 3d is fine sometimes !
Thanks again for ‘incendia 1.5’ looking forward to realising it’s full potentials ! .v.
