Cod ina' Cave
Description…well its kinds obvious, its a Cod in a Cave ;-)
Ok, its a Black Cod (Epinephelus daemelii) sorrounded by Eastern Pomfrets (Schuettea scalaripinnis) at Fish Rock Cave (http://www.southwestrocksdive.com.au/) off the Northern NSW Coast, Australia (http://tinyurl.com/a99zm4)
Black Cod are classed as a “Vulnerable” species, they are not yet and hopefully will never be endangered.
Follow the 2 links above and from one you will see a drawing of Fish Rock Cave.
This dive site is one of the must-do dives not just of Australia but of the world!
The classic Fish Rock photograph is similar to this one but with Grey Nurse Sharks so it was great to get this shot, particularly as the Black Cod are relatively shy and tend to run and hide when divers approach.
This shot also features in one of my calendar’s
Cod ina' Cave belongs to the following groups:
Conservation Photography, Nature's Wonders, Something Fishy, Underwater & Sealife (Limit 2 Per Day) and Underwater Photographer's Guild Available for sale asGreeting Cards, Matted Prints, Laminated Prints and Canvas Prints

Oh my word this is a big money shot for sure

Thanks for that Marcus!
This is a fav of mine not so much for the shot but for the experience. Fish Rock is home to a number of Black Cod but they are very shy and its near impossible to get close to them on open circuit.
I entered the cave from the shallow end, didn’t see this guy at all (they are great at hiding despite their size) and moved in, looked back over my shoulder and saw him, quick turn, snaped a shot, and he was gonski.
My settings were right…how lucky was I !
But maybe thats the dive site? Lots of opportunities.

Great shot, wow! I hope I get to dive there someday!
Aengus Moran replied
If you are over this way Becky let me know and I’ll link you up with Peter who is the more established of the two dive operators up there (its only 5.5 hours by car north of Sydney)

I would LOVE that! I need to plan a trip out there to stay for a while! Again really beautiful image, its difficult to shoot through all those fish without a strobe reflecting off of them!

Perfect composition Aengus- you can see every fin on that cod, great for identifying- it even looks like the cave is shaped like a heart. Great work!
