Circular Quay (East) Sydney, Australia, 1963 by

This view of the Eastern side of Circular Quay was taken from the AMP building in March 1963.

Beyond the buildings, we see on Benelong :Point the first stage of construction of the Sydney Opera House which was started four years earlier. The final stage was not completed until 1973.

The warships in the harbour were accompanying the Royal yacht Britannia, which was anchored on the Western side of Circular Quay.

It’s great to see an old photo like this Adrian – 1963 was the first time I went to Sydney as a wide-eyed 13yr old. Incredible to see that old wharf there (where harbour views are so valued today), but in the old days, old wharves took the prime spots on the harbour. Great photo and thanks for sharing it. Cheers, Graham.

  • Thanks Graham. Yes, it is fascinating to see these photos and to realise just how much the Quay has changed.

“Some changes” indeed … how the years fly by … thanks for sharing the memories :)

  • Ah yes. It’s frightening how fast they fly by but it’s good to be able to share memories like this.
