Circular Quay (West) & Harbour Bridge Sydney 1963 by

This view of Circular Quay (Sydney) shows a dramatically different landscape to what exists today.

Moored at the (then) Overseas terminal is the Royal Yacht Britannia.

The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh were then in Australia primarily to attend Canberra’s jubilee celebrations which commemorated the fiftieth anniversary of the naming of the capital. The tour lasted from 18 February to 27 March

Wow, another oldie and just as good. I had the good fortune to tour the “Britannia” in Edinburgh last year. Look at North Sydney – no skyscrapers!

You toured the Britannia? I’m impressed. Yes, no skyscrapers and you can even see the television towers up at Artarmon. I am really happy with how well these old negatives are scanning.

The Britannia has been decommissioned and it’s berthed next to a shopping centre at Leith in Edinburgh and it’s open to tourists now. All the furniture and fittings are just as it was when it was the royal yacht and they have added an enclosed cafe on the top deck and they hold weddings now and receptions in the royal dining rooms. It’s only about 20 pounds or so and you guide yourself around with the aid of a hand held headphone set. It takes about 2 hours to see the lot. Cheers Adrian.

  • Looks like a must see when we eventually do a UK trip.

I remember that tour! My parents were among those who met “the Royals” in Hobart.

  • Your parents met the Royals! OK, I’m impressed. Tell me more.
