Until the construction of the Southern Freeway which connected Sydney (Kingsford Smith) Airport with the city, all important visitors to Australia would pass through our quiet little suburb of Eastlakes.

Frequently we would see cavalcades of Royalty, Presidents, politicians and pop stars passing by our corner on their way to or from the airport.

Next to Royalty, this cavalcade in October 1966 was the biggest of them. Here, in one car we have (in the back seat) Ed Clark (US Ambassador to Australia) and Bob Askin (Premier of NSW). In the centre seat we see Lyndon Baines Johnston (President of the USA) and Harold Holt (Prime Minister of Australia).

The American President was in Australia to drum up support for an escalating involvement in the Vietnam War. Harold Holt’s use of the phrase “All the way with LBJ” inflamed opposition to the war within Australia.
