This is one of the many magnificent banksias to be found in Kings Park.

Banksia praemorsa is beautiful shrub native to Albany in the coastal south-west of Western Australia. From winter through to the end of spring, cylindrical flower spikes up to 35cm (14in) long and 10cm (4in) in diameter appear. They gradually open from the base upwards, beginning with yellow and blending to red at the tip. Flower colours can vary with mixtures of red, green, yellow and purple. Seed cones are the same size as the flower spikes and contain spent flowers.

B. praemorsa is a dense upright shrub to 4m (13ft) with toothed, wedge shaped leaves. The new foliage is a rusty brown, older leaves are green.

Good one Adrian. It’s coming up to the time for the annual Wildflower show in Kings Park and I shall be there in force! Just waiting for this current spell of grotty weather to move over your way! Peter

  • Thanks Peter. Enjoy the wildflower show. If you can identify this for me while you are there I would appreciate it. Your weather certainly has been grotty but we’re more than happy for it not to come our way.

    This is a great shot.

Similar to mine of last year – see here

I think it might be Banksia gardneri – I find the florabase.calm.wa.gov link extremely helpful and gardneri is described there – still not sure, which is why I have not renamed my image. Sorry Adrian, best I can do for now, but if you find a definite identification, I would like to know :)

  • Thanks Mik. I’ll see what I can find.
