Nikon D300

I have a Nikond D80, and shooting in pubs and clubs has been a fun, exciting but often frustrating experience. Time to get with the technology… D3s are sexy as hell, but outside the realm of possibilities, but a D300 looks the goods.

I’m not looking to be sold on the quality… what I need, is for someone that has got one, to testify to the awesome performance at high ISOs, and would be willing to call my girlfriend and explain how my life will cease unless I get my hands on one

Not too much to ask right?

(Steph, if you are reading this, please check the tags from the journal entry to prove that even while I’m looking at spending silly amount of money, I’m still thiking of you!)

sadly, the tags are alphabetical, so they come up as “I love Nikon”... I would remove “Nikon” from the tags, but I do’t want to hurt their feelings

You would think that was all it would take… ISO 1600 looks like 400 on my D80. What sort of world do we live in, where she can’t understand that??

1600 on my D70 looks like sensor-malfunction sometimes! Oh how I would sell my soul (don’t believe in souls) for a D300!

Steph – when you throw him into the garage give him at least one blanket to keep him warm.

Just wait till the lens lust hits you after you get your D300!

    Evil game this photography

With a D300, I wouldn’t need a blanket…. I’d simply put the beast onto live view, and at ISO3200 I could be easily fooled into believing that it was the middle of the day. That would comfort me while I froze to death slowly

Sadly, for gig photos, I don’t really have much more to lust for… I have a 50mm 1.8 and a 30mm 1.4 which are superb for the venues I’m shooting. The D80 noise is my limiting factor. I love to try, but continue to suck at landscapes, and find little waking hours for other sorts of photography. Lens lust is there, but it isn’t yanking fiftys out of my wallet at any sort of alarming rate

First Steph loves you, second after the shock of finding out how much you are going to spend she will still love you, thirdly Steph loves you! OTFL.
You only get one life and thats for living go for it, tell Steph how exspensive sky diving is that should do the trick.

Triple the price for a D3, with all the extra ticks in boxes I don’t need… if black was black at 1600 with my D80, it wouldn’t be a problem. Sadly, black is often litered with red, blue, purple and green noise which eats away at details like a disease. It took me about 30 seconds with a D300 to see how different it would be in low light.

Since low light is pretty much my bread and butter now, and I have all the gigs and events lined up to pay for the thing… the D80 will sadly be retired. I love it, but I’ve found myself in a niche that it doesn’t suit :(

Steph is 30 in 6 months, and we are going to New York to celebrate. Every cent that goes into the camera isn’t going to our trip. She is very, very, very, very, very supportive… but makes me feel guilty enough to carefully consider my camera lust :D
