Every year in February we celebrated Straô.
Straô is an annual tradition in our former island of Schouwen-Duiveland.
During the event richly decorated horses go for the first time in the year to the beach and into the sea. In this way the horses legs are cleansed of evil spirits in salt water.
Originally, this festival was held on the first Monday of Lent. After 1955 it moved to Saturday and is celebrated in every village on another day. From mid-February to late March, this festival is celebrated every Saturday in another place on Schouwen-Duiveland. These places are Renesse, Burgh-Haamstede, Noordwelle, Ellemeet, Scharendijke and Serooskerke.
This horse and rider are washing the feet too, or are they swimming………?
