This is the gravestone marking Alice Flagg’s grave in Pawley’s Island, South Carolina…

According to legend, Alice fell in love with a man her wealthy family believed was “unworthy of her stature”…(Both of her brothers were doctors and are buried near Alice)… The man she loved gave her a ring that she was forbidden to wear, so she hung it on a ribbon and wore it secretly around her neck beneath her clothing. Denied of her love, she was sent off to Charleston, South Carolina. In Charleston, Alice became very ill, and one of her brothers immediately went to get her to bring her home. Tragically, Alice died. On her deathbed, all Alice wanted was her ring… In her delirium, she kept asking for her ring… Give me my ring… I want my ring… Her brother refused. It is said that if you walk 6 times counter-clockwise and then another 6 times clockwise and leave Alice a token on her gravestone, she will tug on your ring… longing for hers that her gentleman gave her so long ago… There is a worn path around her grave… My husband and I gave her a ring inscribed with “love”…. in honor of the love she lost… There were many tokens already there when Kev and I arrived. You may see many of them, including the Camellia blossoms, in this photograph. Alice died when she was 15. All of her family members have complete names and dates on their markers… Alice’s merely states her first name.

    what a tragically romantic story….

  • Bittersweet beauty… isn’t it? My heart aches for this poor girl… I cannot fathom not being “allowed” to love the person I wish to love… You say it best with “tragic”… Indeed… Thank you for favoriting this one, too!
    Hugs,
    A
