a swift cut right into heart tissue
like a hammer beating steel
into a new form

sometimes it comes in softly
on tiptoe
catching you off guard
and ill prepared

sometimes you see it wither
before your very eyes
unable to stop it
like a stone
rolling down the rocky face
of a high mountaintop

sometimes it’s easier
to let go
than try again
because your tired of breathing in
to its stale lungs
trying to catch a star
