This is the Old Mountain Road in Keene, NY. It runs behind my house.
The road was the original one to link Westport and Saranac Lake, but was replaced by the Cascade Road (Rt 73) in the late 1850s. By the 1920s, when the last maintenance was done, it had fallen into complete disuse. It was used as part of the ski trail for the 1932 Lake Placid Olympics.
Now, it is part of the Jackrabbit cross country ski trail, and makes for a nice walk in the fall, especially since I can get to it out my back door. Parts are barely recognizable as a road now, especially where the beavers have set up shop in the shadow of Pitchoff mountain and flooded it.
It has also been the subject of much debate (and many lawsuits) regarding its status as a road and whether the DEC has the jurisdiction to ban vehicles from it.
