~ When the Drinking’s Done ~ (For Phillip Wise)

Gather up your kits lads string your swaggie roll
say hooroo to mates lads and take the next long stroll
for the shearing is all over and the drinking now is done
and we shall travel wide lads towards the rising sun
to see if work is handy to occupy a bloke
before he’s stuck with working in the vast big smoke

We’ll take along with us, mem’ries, good and bad
shared around a campfire with yarns spun from our swag
of little Johnnie’s exploits and those of Fearless Dan
and Bossy Bess the shearer’s cook and her mighty pan
Remember when the storm hit and lit that bit of bush
’twas all hands to the wet bags then to beat that fire to mush
no sooner had we done it the rains began to fall
and then we turned to bagging to save the blasted hall

But all in all a good day’s work was done by every man
he earnt his pay and tucker bag filled by Bessy’s pan
and now it’s time to mosie on along the redc dust track
roll up my oiled shears in my trusty swag a’back
whistle as you stroll along, your dog beside you run
now that the drinking’s done

Artist's Description

This is another piece inspired by the gorgeous art of Phillip Wise from Tassie

‘Country Ghosts’ by Phillip Wise I love how the door is cut to fit the sloping floor! ☼Ü☼
Mind you that’s an old butter churn so this shed was possibly something more to do with milking than sheering but the feeling was there!

☼Ü Happy Bubbling! Ü☼
Chookas! ♥☼Ü☼♥
