~ Traversing the long long paddock! ~

The country rolls on forever, flat and wide, further than the eye can see
Be still, listen, wafting on the summer breeze, the sounds pass oblivious
Faint, the pierce of a whistle, the crack of a whip, a dog’s sharp yapping; did you hear?
and what of the dust kicked into the wind by a thousand tired hooves on the run
Traversing the long long paddock!

Men have come and men have gone
Droving their cattle on and on
Crossing the country from north to south
Traversing the long long paddock!

Neath the vast iridescent ominous sky, fighting the oppressive heat of day
Millions of flies seek their luxury in the slightest hint of any moisture
The mournful lowing of the near spent cattle fills the baking afternoon air
Desperate to reach the next watering hole, forcing the drove forever on
Traversing the long long paddock!

For a century or more the hooves marched hard, crisscrossing the land all over
This is the make or the break of the country relying on the strength of the drover
Fortunes were made in this testing way bringing beef to market, sheep for the clip
Now the value has dropped, wills weakened by substance, import, export, gone
Usurped by trains, miles of rail and road trucks guzzling barrels and barrels of gasoline
Traversing the long long paddock!

Whispers of hardship found the joys of success, achieving the tasks set to prevail
Building the strength, persistent and sure, making life honourable noble and proud
Echoes long fading, much harder to hear, insist you listen closely to the horizon of life
Remember the struggles, the battles, the toil,
…. which built our identity our nation our world ……

Men have come and men have gone
Droving their cattle on and on
Building the nation to nourish us all
Traversing the long long paddock!

adgray is a writer and a poet
- telling stories all her life,
- writing them down once she learnt how
“Scribbling! Always scribling!”
… and no there was nothing to be done about it!
Her poetry came later when the gift found her to be a ZETE segue (Zographonic Extemporanious Treatise Ekphrasis)
At times she can go into a trance-like state as poetry flows through her to the page and screen
Thank you for coming to read my words! ~ adgray~

Excellent. Reading your wonderful words, paints the picture without seeing it. But It’s a wonderful painting where you got your inspiration from.
