~ Cairn of Courage ~

Silently the Scott rocks came
one by one all the same
lay together in field of blood
freedom sought courage loved
…..

What’s that wafting on the breeze
rumbling murmurs of unease
thunder through the eerie fog
scarlet coats rabid dogs
scrounging savage scouring all
lording over loving souls

Silently the Scott rocks came
one by one and all the same
faced the foe proud and strong
bravely fought the day long
but conflict comes from many source
and victory did not run their course

when soft dusk falls the light is low
the field is strewn life to the foe
the cries are silenced by the butchers blow
hope fades in the field of blood

The pipes are quiet all tartan shred
stolen by the enemy dread
freedom sought courage love
squashed beneath the velvet glove
Clans disbanded lords are slain
childer lost in resulting reign
the Bonnie prince fled the game
the highlands will never be the same

So walk the steps of those before
listen to the locals lore
and if you visit be mindful of
the cairn of courage and field of love!

Thank You!

adgray is a writer and a poet
- telling stories all her life,
- writing them down once she learnt how
“Scribbling! Always scribling!”
… and no there was nothing to be done about it!
Her poetry came later when the gift found her to be a ZETE segue (Zographonic Extemporanious Treatise Ekphrasis)
At times she can go into a trance-like state as poetry flows through her to the page and screen

Ahhh what a wonderful poem, in the same genre as Rabbie Burns. I like it, it flows easily in the mind and transports in place and time. Being a Scot it tuggs the heart, and makes one wonder with Scotland ever be the same again, and do we want it to be? Instead of dreaming of the past glories of battles lost and won, let us unite and fight with weapons of peace for truth, humility, justice and peace with all peoples. Let the Scots lead the way for the rest of the world to follow. A wonderful poem my friend. May many who’re Scottish at heart read with care though:-) The Cairn of Courage and the field of Love. It takes real courage to turn the other cheek, to bless your enemies and love them.

  • REALLY? As Good as the Burns? W O W !!! I do feel special!
I am so glad it inspired you to pen your own incentives to move forward!

fabulous and moving, some of my ancestors are buried there ad, we were bodyguards to the macdonalds clan, McIninch is my maiden name, years ago the spelling of the time was different, I have been to this spot some years back, and boy its bleak and very very quiet, that was the one thing i truly noticed there, the lack of noise except the grass blowing in the breeze, dawnx

  • I think many a Scottish descendant have ancestors buried there along with the Highland dreams
I’m Marrying a many generation removed Aussie McDonald [when we can scrounge up the money for the license!] and my grandfather comes from Scotland. I have more affinity with the Irish in me but then I know more about the Scottish History! [go figure lol]
The father of my youngest 3 kids is from Glasgow so they have more affinity with Scotland than I, but then they’re from an Irish descendant possibly one that came out Via France to help in returning the Bonnie Prince
But with all due respect for the Clan Law, from what I have read of Charlie I have no idea why the Braw Scotts would want such a French Fop to be their leader! He even ran and hid out of sight & range of the Culloden battle! They needed to find someone with the strength of Wallace …. but yet again you wonder how much of that was romanticised!

Wonderful Addy, and Joak’s image is also!

  • Isn’t it! He says he’s only a photy taker but WOW what photy’s he takes!!!
Thank you for coming to read this I am quite happy with it! even if I did take time in the middle of it to go research the battle & read up on Charlie Not sure if I like the bloke much – he seems to come across as a soft French Fop! I was hoping for someone with some true Braw about them! But No he had powdered wig & silk pantaloons & a beauty Spot! – & he ran away & hid from the muddy mess instead of pitch in & fight!
The Scotts deserved Far Better than that!
Thank you for coming to read this! I am glad you like it!
