In 1863 Marysville’s founder, John Steavensen, loved the place so much he named it after his wife
Today, it is a popular escape with its beautiful mountain setting in a sub-alpine resort town noted for its scenic attractions, bush walking and old-fashioned timber guesthouses
It’s also a winter base for the cross-country ski fields of Lake Mountain
Bruno Torf, originally from South America, brought his family here in 1995. As a sculptor and artist he wanted somewhere to exhibit his works of art so he opened Bruno’s Art & Sculpture Garden. There are over 280 pieces of his life’s work on display in a rainforest sculpture garden
If you’re feeling peckish then only 5 minutes out of town is Mantirri Blueberry Farm. You pay for what you pick and there are lots of tasty treats to try such as blueberry wine, blueberry tea, blueberry jam, blueberry pancakes, blueberry ice cream and blueberry sauce
Looking for a bit more adventure and a taste Victoria’s High Country? Then saddle up with the Black Spur Riding Centre for a three hour mountain ride. You’ll even get to tackle a short stretch of the National Trail, officially the longest horse riding track in the world
At night you could finish off with a romantic moonlight walk to Steavenson Falls
Marysville’s biggest attraction, these are Victoria’s highest falls, and the walking track and falls are lit up every night from dusk until midnight
Saturday 14th a week from when the fires destroyed this town, the survivors were allowed to return. They were bussed up and given time to look their properties over and grieve. They cannot stay – there is nowhere to stay. The only building to survive ironically is the bakery….. a bit like the only part of a house to stand after a fire is the chimeny & fireplace
Arson is suspected for the obliteration of the town and the forrensic team are still working on it. They have not discovered exactly how it was lit but firefighters just know the difference between a bushfire lit by natural causes and a deliberately lit fire – the way the fire burns is different.
The man caught and charged for the Churchill Fires will stand trial next month. He will be under the strongest security but he will be imprisoned for fire causing death and child pornography and when he goes to gaol he will have to be kept in a special solitary confinement for either cause would endanger his welfare in with the usual inmates.
In my personal oppinion I feel arsonists should be held financially accountable – disqualification of receiving any Government benefits and 80% of their income witheld for the rest of their lives! But they wont be, they will be gaoled. The CFA want them dangled in the flames, the townsfolk want them lynched – but death is not the answer, it would be a mercy for them to escape retribution. They will not reform they have a fascination with lighting fires.
So I say to all you who want lynched, this person & the one(s) who lit this Marysville fire or any fire – allow them to “Rot in Gaol” because the inmates will certainly take the revenge of the world …… piece by psychoticly painful piece!
Such is the passion felt for the person(s) responsible for this destruction, for any fire but especially for the loss of this beautiful Historical Town!
To those in Marysville who have survived and will return to rebuild this town and go on I say we know you will honour it’s beauty of yore and welcome us when we return to support you with our tourism and our love and for those of us lucky enough to hopefully live amongst you.
My heartfelt best wishes and compassion I send to you
