“OK boys we’re in the air!”
Why ever did I agree to this?
“We’ll show the Hun whatfor no less!”
I can’t think about their women and kids
“We’ll repay their visit when they dropped in last night!”
I’ll take courage in protecting the loss of our innocence
“Drop them a few gifts of their own!”
And pray our targets are well away from any Gerry’s home
“Perhaps those buggars will think twice next time!”
Please God if I don’t make it back keep my family safe!
“We’ll teach them to bomb our town!”
I pray that this war will soon be over
“Won’t be long before we’re there!”
God save us and bring us home!
As I told him I saw I felt I wrote
I wonder if this was the silent thoughts going through the minds of all those men set out to do a job they were told had to be done, even as they gave each other a pep-talk to boost their courage.
I don’t advocate for war but I will not dishonour those who fought because they believed they had to…. would our lives be this way had they not?
The crime is not in the service of the men doing what they are told, to protect the freedom of reasonable life that they believe to be in danger of being lost, …. the crime is in the leaders planning such acts, and in those delighting in the outcomes!
Lest We Forget!
