First Love ♥ Horses

Yet another clear memory that I hold dear
Again when I asked my parents they were stunned at my ability to remember something from such a young age. I was 5 months old!

When we were young, our neighbour’s daughter would bring her show horse to town some weekends and for the Royal Melbourne Show in September. As they had a pool in their yard she would bring it to graze in our back yard. While it did that we children were allowed to “Ride” him, a huge bay gelding thoroughbred!

This memory was of the first time I was given a ride … apparently I sat up there for over an hour and everytime they tried to take me off I would scream “No” and kick my heels and the horse would dance away and then I would laugh! Mum and dad had been terrified I would drop off but I never did!
Since then never am I more centred and completely happy unless I am on the back of a horse!

{This is part of an autobiographical collection}

How do I explain the first time I experienced feeling absolute bliss?
The bliss of security and freedom and pure happiness!
You may not believe me but this is a memory that I still hold clear

I am carried through the circle of green towards the brightness beyond
Beside me my father’s ear safe in the darkness of his hair, his bushy eyebrows with their red hairs in the darkness fascinated me I loved to touch them
Through the green tunnel we emerge into the brightness and then I feel I’m lifted and placed on something warm and big and moving. I find more dark hairs with red through them and I grab it with both hands. And the thing moved beneath me, I felt safe secure and free ….!!!!

Never have I felt such bliss again … unless on the back of another horse.

    I remember you telling me this story before and it is still moving to me. I remember sneaking off once when I was three to see my uncle’s horses. They lived across the street from us and I simply climbed in the back seat of his car with all of his kids as they headed to the farm. I was just wanting to go somewhere and when they said that they were going to see Gail’s new colt, I thought they said coat…lol..and I went anyway. What a thrill for me when I discovered that they were talking about a horse! Fell in love that day although it took me 46 more years to consummate the relationship—ha. Of course my mom was terrified by my disappearance and wasn’t too please with me once I got home and she stopped kissing me and crying from relief. But it is a memory that has stuck very firmly in my mind and heart all of these years.
