“Young one you know how I’m older than thee?”
said the largest of the trees
“Another is growing smaller than you
and we must tell it the best thing to do”
“I know I know” said the younger tree
“To grow as tall as the moon. Will it be sibling to me?”
‘Yes it shall it will grow by and by”
and the trees stood and watched the new reach for the sky

When the new one grew leaves
it rustled it’s speech
“Who am I? Who are you?
Strange I feel I must reach”
The largest tree swayed in a wind of pride
bowed close to the sapling with boughs open wide
“You are a sapling, of a tree such as I
and that feeling you have is to reach for the sky”
“I am your sibling you’ll be safe with me”
welcomed the smaller, the sibling tree
“It’s bright and it’s hot during the day
but often at night it is not that way
But soon you shall see the mighty moon rise
and we’ll follow its trail through the skies”

The great moon rose at the coming of night
but the poor little sapling quivered in fright
The paternal tree swayed boughs for protection
and the sibling bowed to whisper distractions
“Watch this mighty orb raise up to the sky
and then how small it becomes for it is up so high
But if we grow tall it will stay close
and even though we’ll be taller than most
this mighty orb shall be our friend
and light our night right to the end”

So trying not to be scared and just to be strong
the sapling straightened up proud and long
And watched the orb raise up to the sky
and knew all his days that’s what he would try
And if it should twist or a bough break and drop
the aim to be tall will never stop

Just beautiful Alyssa , l had an experience years ago whilst going to choose a christmas tree a usual family thing , whilst standing in those paddocks with all those pines awaiting there turn at the fall of the axe,l could hear distant screaming, now it was probably just kids because there were alot around of course, but it just got louder and louder ,l wonder to myself if it was actually the cry of the tree’s as their life blood was sucked out of them,l left quickly and bought a imitation xmas tree and could never go back there again ! silly l know but l really do believe that every living thing must have a voice of some description !
Your poem brings added life to the noble tree and thank you for sharing their story xoxoxo

  • adgray replied

Oh I know how you feel but I still need a real pine tree at Christmas! so I bought one in a pot! :O)
Mind you I had to have a huge blue spruce removed – it was diseased & about to fall on my house! – and i was not happy at all about that! I also have a HUGELY HARD TIME with Mick’s current job as a lopper! I dont want to know about the trees he’s felling yes I know the tree was planted in the wrong place by stupid men who didn’t think “little sapling soon becomes giant gum!” or now “Why cant I see out my windows?” or “Why does nothing grow beneath the giant pine tree?” or “I might want to extend the house that way” or “Roots grow & destroy paving, pipes & foundations!” there was even a house that had put in 25 poplar trees along their front fence! I mean REALLY!!! I contain my rage though if the tree is not a native and not over 50 years old and of course dead or diseased otherwise hey you put it there or you set up under it – Live with it! we need every mature tree we have on this planet! part of our drought situation is because the amazon is being wiped out! and yeah sure we are planting new trees but for every human on the plannet we need 5 mature trees and for every car it’s 17 or something? I dread to think of the aeroplanes [do you believe it ! spell check wants me to call them airplanes! bloody yanks!] & space shuttles & the factories all over the world! >(
& don’t get me started on the water or we’ll be here all day! <(

This is so analogous of our children as they grow into adulthood … you are so clever with words and paint the most amazing pictures … and a lot of fine lessons for us to follow – you are a natural teacher! xox

  • adgray replied

    Thank you Jen,
Though sometimes I wonder just how good a teacher I am – my leading by example is a tad shabby of late!
But thank you for your vote of confidence & your accurate analysis of my attempts :O)
[even if I haven’t an obvious idea of why I write before I write :O)]
