Wow Big Crack!

Wow Big Crack!

This is me and my son standing over the crack in the rock! We could see water below and I remember joking about it could fall any moment. My girlfriend took this from on the island part. We joined her and then strolled back and as we reached the cars CRACK ROAR SPLASH!!! yep less than an hour after i stood on the crack the bridge fell!
Now before you go and call me “the straw that broke the camel’s back” and all that there were others who walked it after me! lol Two didn’t get off and needed to be rescued by helicopter! If there hadn’t been a chopper it would have been a very risky boat to the lea side and rock climb up then abseil down … thank goodness for choppers! Thank god no one was actually on it and hurt or killed!
The bridge came down early 1990 and I was pregnant with my second son!
[NB We are the blue & red blob on the right of the bridge]
What a close call!! :o)

Yes Boxes are treasure troves aren’t they? :o) Everyone needs a good box clean out every once in a while :o) and if you don’t have any boxes to clean you can have fun poking about in others boxes :o)

Shite! That WAS close. I remember when London Bridge came falling down and I’m dead sure it was that incident alone that prompted the changes in the safety and conservation standards of the whole area. lol

  • hilarydougill

    hilarydougill, 4 months ago

My goodness you two must have been heavy to break that!!! haha. Great memory shot.

  • adgray

adgray in reply to Lumineux’s comment, 4 months ago

Yeah it was very close! fun how then it just seemed a matter of course … and I actually felt very privileged to have been there! It’s not often you get to see nature do her big work!
But yes it prompted the changes not only to around there but all over the place and sadly now you can’t go out on anything dangerous without a bloody permit! ... or should we be grateful for that??? The daredevil in me is broken hearted <(

  • adgray

adgray in reply to hilarydougill’s comment, 4 months ago

    Thanks! <)

I remember distinctly looking down into the water through the crack. Michael [who was a bout 5 nearly 6 then] was really scared and I was telling him we were safe it wouldn’t come down for years and years yet!! hahahahahaha was I proved wrong and I swear he’ll never believe me again! :o)

I have wondered in the past if the human traffic across the bridge, (although not as prolific as it is now), contributed to it’s downfall. But speaking purely from a conservation angle, it’s probably a good thing to minimise the human impact as much as possible, especially now with the amount of foot traffic this area gets.

Yeah bloody people lead to all kinds of destruction! Unnecessary wear and tear is pure stupidity and all the graffiti – like on the rocks at Lochard Gorge! I mean on man made structures sure but some of the crap those kids scratched into the rocks just wasn’t worth reading the first time let alone for all eternity!

Yep we definitely felt secure in our life that day … not! lol And yeah videoing was about but we didn’t have one <( don’t know if anyone else had one I didn’t see. it was a bit hectic and the authorities shooed us back. I thought there were more people on it but the report was just two. When we went back to take a pick of the mess, the camera film had run out and that was it till we could get back to town … and we had run out of money so we were on our way home then anyway.

I well remember that! It actually wasn’t all that long after the Newcastle earthquake was it? We were walking backwards and forwards across London Bridge and taking numerous photos about 4 or 5 weeks earlier – in fact I still have one taken from the road and it must be one of the last few photos to be shot before the crash. Similar story to yours was when the Apostle crashed a year or two ago – a couple were there taking photos and it quite literally was a case of now you see it, now you don’t! Your story will take a lot of beating though – it’s the “I was There” story to end all “I was There’s” LOL Peter

I didn’t know it was going to fall when it did! We were all just lucky that there wasn’t someone actually on the bit that fell needing to run for it or ride it into the waves! Was scary for the people on it though -0 3 hours before help arived is a bloody long time to wait!

well at the time I was on it I didn’t feel scared but when it dropped I did feel grateful – but also a bit let down I didn’t have the adventure of being caught on the island and then needing to be air lifted off – well the chopper landed but you know what I mean :O)
