Plar - A Loving Gesture

Adam Stone

Plar - A Loving Gesture

Drawn 2008. Age 21. Drawn with a blue biro pen and a blue colouring pencil… and a slight coat of polish in Photoshop.

That there, holding tightly to the cave. is a Plar.
Plars are intriguing little creatures. Beneath their small and fragile form… and past their big alluring eyes… is a courageous and determined spirit.

I’m writing a book on them at the moment, a children’s book… So i like to think of this image and my other previous Plar drawings as playful ideas and concept art

This scene is an important one… The Plar doesn’t see a furious beast, he sees a reflection of himself; he sees a creature that is saddened by loneliness.

The dragon is feared by animals, hunted by warriors and greedily sought for their thick scales. It is a creature that is forever cursed by its majesty. .. Doomed to live and die alone.
This Plar, however, can see past the Dragon’s evil exterior; he can look beyond the teeth, the claws and the mighty roars. He doesn’t see rage… He sees sorrow and sadness… He sees loneliness.

This is why this Plar has climbed high into the sky to the Dragon’s cave… This is why he has picked the rarest flower and offered it as a gift… This is the Plar’s loving gesture.

what a wonderful image… it says so much….. great idea and great execution…. congratulations on a job well done…........................b

  • Adam Stone replied

    Thank you :-)

I’ve just updated the description with the reasoning behind the image. I hope it doesnt influence others own stories though!

I am hoping to refine this a little at a later stage, adding a nice glow to the dragon’s eye and a misty aura to the flowers, but for now, as a pen sketchy thing, i’m pleased with how its turned out.

    Thank you again b

Wonderful, are you going to do a book of Plars I’m sure it would be huge success

  • Adam Stone replied

Aw, thank you for the vote of confidence. I am hoping to create a book of Plars at some point, its actually really lovely you should mention that! That made me smile. I’ve got so many Plar ideas bounching around in my mind at the moment, lots will see the light of day, others are likely to fade away, or appear completely different to how i first visioned them… but yes… definitely am thinking about this… There’s just not enough hours in the day to fit everything in!

Anyhoo, sorry to ramble on and thank you again for your kind comment.

This sounds like a very interesting concept. Is your children’s book going to be the kind that is very short and filled with illustrations, or more of the novel type? In any case I would like to know when you get it published.
Your little Plar is very cute and the dragon is just beautiful. Very, very nice job on this.

  • Adam Stone replied

Hello MaKayla, please excuse the horribly late reply.

To answer your question, the book will take a short story aside numerous illustrations, but written in a poem form. Much like my poems “Beautifully Blue” and “Twilight Tapestry”, which can be found in my Writing section. Actually how it’ll piece together isn’t totally worked out, but i have a pretty clear idea in my head.

I am actually writing a novel too, though that isnt about Plars… My novel is a self help book, some of my ‘darker’ drawings such as “Alone”, “Emptiness” and “Darkness and Pain” are influenced by ths book. Its a project i’ve been slowly working on for years and seems to be taking forever! Hopefully will be worth it though. Here’s hoping.

Your little story is as good as the drawing. How much has your book developed?

  • Adam Stone replied

    Thank you _

The book has sadly been put on hold a little… But i am still playing around with ideas, drafting out some text whenever something pops in my mind and i’m constantly taking photos of scenes i can use as reference when it comes to the drawings. I’ve already outlined a few designs and worked out a story board of sorts… But… everything will just have to wait until i finish my current project sadly.

Also… there’s always the horribly job of hunting out an agent or publisher! shudders

Thank you kindly for your support.

  • Adam Stone replied

Thank you buddy. The more people who like my Plars the merrier!

All of my Plar ideas and current drawings were sadly put on hold due to a project i’m doing for a potential job… But i have so many ideas currently trying to burst out of my head. They will be much bigger then the other plars, bigger as in better quality, more detailed and generally more ‘complete’. I like to think of these as concept art, as playful ideas… So i hope you like what’s to come!
