Darkness...and Pain.

Darkness...and Pain. by Adam Stone

Darkness...and Pain.

Drawn 2008. Age 21

This is my final vision of my original Pain sketch that was quickly drawn during a thinky night.

This picture is inspired by the book i’m writing…

I poured a lot of emotion into this picture, but it seemed to create itself. I tried to illustrate the physical agony of self-harm whilst tapping into the psychological and emotional trauma that prompt such self-destructive actions. Is the Grim Reaper really there? Or is it a symbolic portrayal of her own demons…?

Ultimately, rather then fear I wanted to create an image that evokes feelings of sadness and regret… despite its dark and sinister tone.

Darkness...and Pain. belongs to the following groups:

very powerful, there’s something so dramatic about the different textures, the strokes versus the softness. Darkness and pain…

Definate regret. It looks like one of those days when the reaper says:

    “I bloody hate my job.”

Adam, This is an extraordinary and very powerful image of a person in intense pain. Self mutilation and cutting is more common than most people think and you captured the agony of self harm as a symptom of extreme psychological agony. I would love to know more about the book you are writing. This is a very impressive image, the dark background highlighting deep wounds that I believe lie within.

    You portrayed the emotion well.
Although I see her being in much emotional pain the blood does depict being physically hurt as well. Maybe by her own self affliction….......I’m not sure….....but I do feel the reaper is not really there but yes a figment of her torn imagination.
Wonderful lines, textures and shadows. Well done Adam.

It seems that physical pain for some can be the ultimate proof to self that things are in need of attention emotionally. On a society level violence and pain seems to be the wakeups we need to go deep into heart. Personally I think pain can be empowering so long as we truly listen to it and respect it.

    She is bleeding…
    May be her natural breeding..
    As a woman…
seems strange to beleive that we…women are fertile..
    because we monthly bleed..
And that bleeding has been called the “curse” in many cultures..
and granted a sort of “impurity” on women´s behalf..
Such injustice and ignorance of Life.. is enough pain for her…
that instead of feeling her womanhood as a promise of Life…
she feels it as a terrible omen of Death…
    Truth is…
Woman is the Messenger of Life…
and anyone that is born from her…
is doomed bo Death by means of natural course of Life..
    Archetypical fears….
    Rosa (very intense..)

Thank you, and thank you for all your other comments too. I usually don’t seem to find the time to express my gratitude when people post comments, but i really do appreciate each and every one. Make me smile they do, so thank you again.

The book is/was going well… though I must admit its been put on hold for the time being… But certainly not neglected nor forgotten… Just too much other things to be doing, which is a shame. Anyhow, this is one of my favourite recent drawings, so i’m very pleased you like it too.

    Hello Julia,

I hope you can forgive the lateness of this reply. I’m useless at replying and things have been quite hectic of late… Still, thank you again for your insightful comment. If you’re still interested in hearing about the book i’ll send a little pm your way :-)

I hope you are well and thanks again

beautifully done work. I can’t imagine any better illustration of pain. It seems to me to also be about trauma, violence and possibly suicide. The two figures have a somewhat similar look, though the Grim Guy is standing. They both remind me of fetuses. IMaybe a rebirth?
