When your luck is out!
This poor little ants luck had run out today! A tiny rain shower, which lasted no more than 2 minutes and this little one bit the dust. Wrong place, wrong time I guess, a rain drop much have landed right on him. I think this is a Common Coastal Brown Ant.
I didn’t even nothice it was an ant in there till I took the shot, he was so small, looked like dirt.

Vickie Burt
It is an amazing photo, and plse don’t take offence, but I can’t help wondering at the perfect roundness of the droplet. Could it be a marble?
Adam Gormley replied
Hi Vickie, I was drawn to the perfection of the drop too, that is why I took the shot to start with, the ant I didn’t even notice till I took the shot. The plant leaf it sits on has minute hairs on it, that make the water “repel” and sit up like that. Not sure of the name of the plant, but it looks kinda like an aloe vera plant, without the spikes.
Thanks for the comment, and stopping by :)

Adam Bykowski
I’ve never seen a drop completely round. I wonder if the ant being in it changed the surface tension of the water and instead of being a normal half bubble, the flat half adhered to the leaf, it became a totally round drop. If there is no photo-editing on the bubble then this is truly an amazing find. Way to go Adam.
Adam Gormley replied
These drops are quite common on the hairy leaves, I have heaps of empty ones, some with some strange eggs in it too.. I think the minute hairs hold it round.. Cheers mate!!

armadillozenith
extraordinary.. well-spotted! very clear and focussed. the ant from this viewpoint looks amazing – distorted yet recognisable – good selection of angle for that!
I reckon this could go in Hard Science Rocks as a striking illustration of water’s properties, surface tension pulling it into a globule, keeping it from adhering to the plant’s surface, and trapping the ant.
Annie J Lemay
All I can say is WOW, what a capture!
shararat
