Red Tail Black Cockatoo - Flight

I was totally in Awe as these beautiful birds flew overhead yesterday evening shooting in the Noosa Basin again.. I noticed them in the distance a few days back, with my earlier shots, and was determined to get these close. I didn’t manage to get too close unfortunately, but did snap this one.

They come here in the evenings to hang out on a small dead tree. I will get these close one day soon :) Fingers crossed they hang around for a while. They have a beautiful “sing” call, rather than the other species of cockatoo seems to be more a “squark”..

Canon 50D, 400mm. Noosa Basin, Noosaville, Queensland. This was the last shot I managed to get with the 1/400 shutter, then most the captured were blurred due to low light.

    Hehe, what I would do for a chopper! This bird was doing a spin searching for a water pool to drink from. I so badly wanted to capture the drinking, with cool reflections, but couldn’t get close.. So many snakes in the basin wetlands too.

    How did you get the red panels on top of the tail normally underneath

    Hi Mick, I’m thinking it’s the back light of the sun illuminating them. About 1 metre from him in this shot, is the branch he landed on, I think I got lucky here with the tail feathers out like this, they usually tucked away for flight. I have 1000’s of shots with them ticked up.

    Well what can I say that hasn’t been said, looks like this one is a favorite.
    Excellent Shot. They always come back to roost in the same spot, so if you wait at the dead tree you say they come to, you should have no problem.

    Superb shot Adam. It caught my eye straight away because I had the most memorable encounter with white tailed black cockatoos on a walking trail yesterday. I’ve done the trail thousands of times, yet have never seen any. They were so exciting to watch as they fed on bottle brush, making the usual cockatoo mess!! I am so used to seeing sulpher crested white cockatoos but haven’t managed a shot like this and in the dying light yesterday I did try! Really well done.

    G’day from Melbourne. That’s a simply magnificent shot. Immediate favourite. Was this early morning or late evening?

    Hi David, thanks for the comments and fav mate, appreciated!! This one was early sunset, sun was just up at this stage, and the clouds were just starting their colour change. Luckily in this shot, the sun was to the bottom of the shot, so the feathers caught the rays.
