White-Tailed Black Cockatoos. There was a flock of them in the park next to our house in Kallaroo, just north of Perth. It was great fun chasing them around but quite difficult to get good shots with the telephoto lens. They were very active.

There are two varieties of White-Tailed Black Cockatoo, Carnaby’s (short-billed) Cockatoo and Baudin’s (long-billed) Cockatoo. They are difficult to tell apart unless you can get close enough for a good look at the bill. I suspect these are Carnaby’s Cockatoo but I’m not sure.

They are only found in the SW of Western Australia and the species are both endangered.

Great work Trevor – not an easy thing to do, as you say. I bet the noise was deafening too! They come into our Yanchep garden during spring and settle on the bottlebrush tree, where they promptly proceed to strip off everything that is red!! LOL Peter

  • Thanks Peter – and yes, deafening is the word. You can always hear them coming from a long way off – as soon as I hear them I rush into the house for the camera!!
