Confrontation
A wolf in wolf’s clothing.
I was at home in Kallaroo, Western Australia, watching cricket on TV. I do a lot of that; at least according to Carol I do! Australia was losing so I was getting restless. I noticed this Wolf Spider over by the fireplace, eyeing me up. They are a fierce and feisty lot, the Wolf Spiders, and fearless hunters.
We share our house with several of these. They mostly allow us the run of the place, but occasionally they get a bit grumpy as this one did after suffering numerous ocular assaults from my flash unit from a range of, oh, all of two inches.
He was quite docile for a while; just sat there and let me take pic after pic. But then he started to get a bit angry and agressive. He charged me a couple of times and then started chasing me around the family room. Every time I changed direction he followed me. At one point he actually leapt in the air trying to get to me. No matter that he was about the size of an Aussie fifty cent piece, he was gonna get me no matter what.
After a while I was able to appeal to his better nature and eventually he calmed down. Well, let’s be honest, I ran away and he forgot about me. By the time I returned and caught him in a sandwich box and ejected him from the house (wife’s orders) we were back on friendly terms.
Of course he’s got plenty of mates around the house, so we’ll have to be on the lookout in case they start plotting The Arachnid’s Revenge.
Anyone for a horror movie?

Kaiju
I love your story. great photo. I forget those aren’t mustache, those are eyes under the other 2 eyes. hee! hee! hee!
Trevor Needham replied
Many thanks Kaiju. This spider actually has eight eyes but you can only see six of them in this shot.
Marion Cullen
Wow, fantastic detail in those beady little eyes, and everywhere else that counts. I once accidently stepped on one of these whilst walking around barefoot outside late one night, and they can inflict quite a bite when riled…so you did good to leave him be! Excellent macro Trevor.
Trevor Needham replied
Hi Marion. Good to hear from you. I’ve heard/read that Wolfie’s can inflict a painful bite, even though they are not considered dangerous to humans. But I try never to hurt spiders – I consider them our allies.
Carol Lewsley
Fantastic macro Trevor love your story
Trevor Needham replied
Thanks Carol – and the story is essentially true. I was amazed when the spider jumped three inches in the air trying to get at me!
Steve Bullock
Awesome..
Trevor Needham replied

Great macro shot. I barely tolerate them… never in the house, only outside.
Trevor Needham replied
Thanks Bunny – you should let them stay, they are very helpful in keeping down flies!!!

OK OK I admit to being slightly arachnophobia and hugely “insectaphobic!” Trevor, but it has not stopped me from being amazed at the shots you get. Great work.
Trevor Needham replied
Thanks mate, much appreciated. You know, one way to overcome a phobia is to face it (that’s how I got used to working for a living, LOL!) And to face it from behind a camera makes it a bit easier! :-)
