Rooted in antiquity (1)

The ancient buddhist temple of Ta Prohm, east of Angkor Thom, Cambodia.

This amazing structure was built in the late 12th and early 13th centuries in the Bayon style. Unlike most Angkorian temples, Ta Prohm has been left in much the same condition in which it was found: the photogenic and atmospheric combination of trees growing out of the ruins and the jungle surroundings have made it one of Angkor’s most popular temples with visitors (thanks Wikipedia).

This temple was used as a location for filming of the movie Lara Croft: Tomb Raider.

The tree in this shot is, I believe, a silk-cotton tree (Ceiba Pentandra). Please correct me if I’m wrong!

That’s me centre-field. I set up the shot then got my wife, Carol, to click the shutter.

This is truly amazing…! the age of this scene is mind boggling…..so ancient and so full of mystery…... Cambodia has such a dark and stormy history, but is so beautiful too…...I would love to go there one day…

  • Trevor Needham replied

Well worth the effort. There is so much history there it is hard to take it all in. This was one of the most amazing days I have spent anywhere.

  • Trevor Needham replied

Thanks Rachael – I thoroughly recommend a visit to Siem Riep – there’s a lot more than Ta Prohm to see, though it is definitely one of the highlights.

This is an amazing photo, I find it facinating how a tree can take over a house. ?

  • Trevor Needham replied

Hey Paul – thanks for the comment. You would find the entire temple of Ta Prohm fascinating then because there are sights like this all over it!
