Shark Bay Sunset Pelican Parade
The Shark Bay Sunset Pelican Parade happens each evening, as the pelicans pack cruises close to the shoreline of Monkey Mia. Their dusk swim coincides with the return of the fishermen, who then clean their days catch on the beach. The pelicans approach in the hope of receiving a tidbit. Some see them as nuisances, but they are forever graceful and comical – and not shy when it comes to trying to snatch some fish!
Taken at sunset in Monkey Mia, Shark Bay, Western Australia.
Taken with a Canon 5D, 100-400mm L Series Lens @ 130mm, f5.6, 1/125th sec, ISO 1600, handheld. As is – the vignetting is natural, caused by the light subsiding around the bright sun.

Many thanks – the camera settings were f5.6, ISO 125, 1/1600th sec, 130mm of a 100-400mm lens, handheld. The sun was setting fast, and this was the last of the shots i managed to get in before it faded completely.

Excellent Capture!! I’ve often felt pelicans, with their crooked necks, long beaks, and that great pouch … make for great silhouette shots. Don’t see the pouches in this particular shot, but the composition and the colors in the sky and captured reflections in the water make for an excellent shot all the way around.
