Diffused Glow & Soft Focus

Add richness and soften distractions while maintaining details with this quick technique.

1. Open the image in photoshop and make whatever density/colour corrections and cropping that is needed.

A the moment, despite the fact that the photo is lovely macro shot, it still needs a little extra.

2. Duplicate the layer and then go to Filter > Blur> Gaussian. Set the radius at approximately 50 – 100 depending on the image size.

Then set the blend mode to Overlay or Soft Light depending on the intensity that you are after.

Now if you look at the photo, you will notice that a lot of the detail is blurred over.

3. Now open your layer styles pop up menu to apply some advanced blending by using the Blend If Sliders. On the the left hand side you will see two black sliders. These sliders blend the active layer with out deleting and can be moved to change the blend mode at any time. Move the sliders to the first point, then to seperate them, click “alt” and move the second one. For this photo I used 15/100.

Now you have the finished product below with a before and after!

This technique can also be used on B&W photos, portraits and the list goes on.
