Giving - the Pheasant Project

32×70 inches – oil on canvas with palette knives

i work for microsoft (which is a tremendous blessing). we are a very charity minded company.

once a year MSFT sponsors an in-house, online auction where employees contribute goods or services and then other employees from around the globe can bid on them. MSFT corporate then matches whatever the employees raise and we give it all to charity. we’re talking millions, folks…

this year i offered to do a painting to the winner’s size and color preferences. the winning bid was very nice. the kind lady who won said she wanted it to be 32×70 inches, and the palette of a pheasant.

sooo… here you go! the pheasant projet :0)

fantastic color study, Ray. very nicely done.

  • Ray Schloss replied

much appreciated, da! this was definitely a palette departure from my normal work, but enjoyed using the more earthy hues. :0)

i have to admit I am glad to hear of MS having an auction like that, I think it’s a fantastic idea and more companies should do it!

Excellent painting for such a great cause….we do the same thing at our company where we have a silent auction to raise money for charity.. we did not raise millions however we did raise a good chunk of change…....I took several paintings and prints and was pleased that everyone sold… I cant seem to sell my paintings, however they did very well at this charity silent auction event which I did feel very good about….

  • Ray Schloss replied

    thanks, robin… hope you’re having a great weekend. :0)

Ray.. I like the idea of charity.. and… to get you to use colors you normally do not use! this has a setteling feeling a feeling of layers of earth and I would say I am partial to these colors myself for home.. Gorgeous work and I am sure she was thrilled! thank God you did not forget your famous line of deep passionate RED!!

  • Ray Schloss replied

thanks, lina! ya, i built this frame and then let it hang empty for a week. procrastination due to uncertainty about the palette. but what a surprise on the colors! as you mentioned i’m also feeling quite partial to it. the kids about begged me not to ship it b/c they liked it so much, asking that i just do another one for her instead. but… no dice. i was psyched too that a pheasant’s head has bright red and black! to your point… had to have the excuse to get those in there somewhere! thanks for the comments! :0)

this work SO helps me understand your entire process ray… how you see the world and translate it to canvas,,,,,,,, thank you for posting it….... it really is a learning tool…...... b

  • Ray Schloss replied

thanks, b… glad it could be of some assistance on that. funny thing… a friend from work really liked it (i did a painting for his daughters) but commented that it looked like a pheasant that got hit by a truck! X-)

Wow – I love your interpretation of “32×70 inches, and the palette of a pheasant” and it looks fantastic hanging! Is that your entrance hall, very nice and bright.

Shame you aren’t in Perth so we could paint together from time to time : ( I think we could bounce some pretty good ideas off eachother.

  • Ray Schloss replied

maybe i’ll make it there someday, carmen! that would be cool. i actually really wanted to move to brisbane after college for some reason,, but it never happened. :0)

  • Ray Schloss replied

and yes… it’s at my house. that’s why the kids don’t want it to go!

  • Carmen Cilliers

    Carmen Cilliers

... they don’t want the house to go or the painting? the painting yes, that’s what you mean. I love the light coming into the entrance, I think it looks like your house must have a nice energy to it and it’s probably unclutterede. (I hate clutter!) : )

  • Ray Schloss replied

it is defintely uncluttered! what’s funny is that the my desk is a mess, but i’m pretty strict about the rest of the house. on the light side, just putting up blinds now after 2 1/2 years of procastination. it gets very bright, which i love, but makes watching tv during the day almost impossible. and i guess that’s a good thing! :0)

This really appeals to me. Even more when you see it hung on the wall in your pic. Not usually my type of colours but it all blends really well :)

  • Ray Schloss replied

hi, carley… not my colors either, hence why i waited a week to start it after building the frame! but glad you like it. will probably try this palette again sometime… :0)

  • Carmen Cilliers

    Carmen Cilliers

Yea – what are you doing watching tv on a beautiful day?

  • Ray Schloss replied

RARELY do… rather be out trainnig for a triathlon! :0) of course winter is a comin’ round these parts, carmen… it’s moving into summer for you, yes?

Mate, what an eyecatcher, I love the simplicity and colour, a really beautiful combination, well done Ray.

  • Ray Schloss replied

thanks, amigo! we had to remove it from the frame for shipping, as it was going to cost almost $300 based on the size to get it to seattle from DC. but, she got it reframed and all worked for the best. much obliged!
