Barbarism (7) - Dragon head

Szilvia Ponyiczki

Grantham, United Kingdom

Artist's Description

Part of a series.

Barbarism has a duality in its meaning.
It may refer to a barbarian society as a primitive culture, which has never been civilised.
On the other hand in linguistics it can be an erroneously constructed or derived expression, incorrect use of language, culturally lacking in refinement or distinction.
These paintings try to combine both meanings of barbarism.

The masks use the language of our times, they are made of newspaper articles cut to shape. The text stripes of the pictures are words or part sentences of these articles out of their context and reconfigured. They got a new meaning but still contain the original one. These are not complete sentences but rather special mixtures of words adding some mood and humour to the pictures, following the flow of the painted lines or blocking them.
