Today I have a shelter, for tomorrow I may not
Today I have a meal, for tomorrow I may not
Today I have a coat, for tomorrow I may not
Today I have survived, for tomorrow I may not.
My life hit rock bottom when I reached grade ten
I was a lonely girl earning money off men
Homeless and starving, over and over again
I was repeatedly failing my life’s secret plan.
I feel like an animal, so naked, so bare
I am a vacant body, so useless and unaware
I am one more in the population without their care
I want to pick myself back up and get my share.
It all starts with that little bit of motivation
To do what I need, it requires no imagination
All I need for this is just a solid foundation
This will be my beginning, my innovation.
The pain and the suffering I went through
Was enough to give me the power to pursue
All my dreams and hopes of being true
And it lies in the faith of me not you.
The job I now have serves the people that were like me
Discovering talents which I’ve used as my key
It has opened doors that before I could not see
This is the beginning that will help us be free.
Today I am standing in front of an overwhelming crowd
No word passed through their mouths, not a single sound
I felt a power rushing through my body, I was proud
Standing up high and there I spoke aloud.
“Today you have a shelter, for tomorrow you may not
Today you have a meal, for tomorrow you may not
Today you have coat, for tomorrow you may not
Today you have survived, for tomorrow you may not.”
This is the story that will bring success
This is the story that I must not suppress
This is the story that motivates the hopeless
This is the story that I bestow on the homeless.
well i wrote this for my English assignment. we had to write about what we think a hero is. my teacher was trying to get us (my class) to avoid writing about stereotypical heroes for example a big strong and handsome man saved the baby from the burning house. if you get what i mean. i received an A for this, and A+ is the highest mark you can possibly get. so i am proud of this piece and its meaningful to me. i hope you all like it :)
