dry mounting

Can anyone give me some advice on dry mounting my prints. I don’t want to do it myself but order it. I have looked but there is too much choice and I am confused (not hard, granted). Some of the examples I have seen is: dibond, foamex PVC, foamboard, perspex and MDF. If anyone has done this or exhibited like this I would be grateful for any advice you can give.

Thanks in advance

I would avoid MDF since the glues can cause damage to your prints in the long term.

The product that RB use is excellent – you should look it up.

Thank you so much for your advice Byron – really appreciate and good to know what to avoid. I do love rb’s printing so will look into it although not sure if I could afford to do too many – thanks again :)

The studio I work for uses sintra (it might be the same as pvc) and it looks fantastic. So clean and contemporary. Goes with anything.

Thanks Cadence – will google it and have a look. Hope life is treating you well x

Foam board dents very easily. The Sintra is good, as well as a product in the U.S. called Gator Board. It is much more rigid than foam board, but is also very expensive. MDF is just very dense particle board.

Thanks JohnGo – I haven’t yet come across Sintra in a UK printers but there is a foamex pvc – could that be similar? Forgive my ignorance – first time :)

RB matted prints are great and I used them for exhibits. They look great, do not require framing, and are relatively inexpensive. Also the RB high-gloss mounted prints are superb, but more expensive. However, you save the framing cost since you can hang them “as is”.

  • Deborah Parkin replied

Thanks Miron. I do really like rb products but to be honest prefer matt (as in their mounted prints) – but will look into the matted prints. Appreciate your thoughts :)

Sintra is basically a dense white plastic that cuts easily. It is durable with a bit of flex. Not sure what other names it goes by, though. Check it out here: http://store.foamboardsource.com/.

    Hope it helps!

Thanks again JohnGo – will go and check out – appreciate you taking the time to comment :)

I have two of my prints on the RB high-gloss board and they are very nice. As long as the gloss is what you want. The board is totally stiff and stable and as light as foam which is important in shipping. The photo is sealed with a hard finish which allows normal cleaning. The only drawback is the cost. Just don’t make the mistake of putting the title on them, I did and our local gallery won’t display them as they look too much like a “poster”. They are OK with the mounting though.

Thanks so much Rany – really valuable advice. I agree about the name .. I much prefer it without the only problem is I want a border – wish rb would do it with border/no name option. Thanks again – food for thought!

you might try a print shop, which there are alot of in local shopping centres, or a framing shop, and talk to them, even if they don’t have what you have in mind Deb, they’re always a wealth of information, I’ve learned alot talking to them. Now a days they seem to do everything, but then their price might be high, but I guess there’s no cost in asking : )
