The Diver
I usually call these divers who dive in freezing cold lakes in the middle of January ‘nutters’ but i went along to see them and i have to admit i actually admired their passion for their sport. This was taken in the Lake District – a very special part of the UK – it was freezing but beautiful. When they go down into the lake after about 8 metres the visability is almost non-existent (apparently this is part of the thrill) and i wanted to convery this vulnerability and isolation in this image.

Excellent shot Deb! Great composition, details, and dof.
Zigga
You’ve captured this beautifully. There’s a great sense of the unknown but something special too! Gorgeous image!
Jeff Burns
OMG I swore it said “The Driver” then I opened this up and I was like what the heck!!
Man my eyes played tricks on me on that one.
Love this shot Deb. Like the way you caught the water in this shot. Beautifully done.
Rhana Griffin
Is it odd that this image makes me feel a little claustrophobic? I guess that in itself goes to show that this is a powerful and very emotive piece. You do this so well Deb…
Deborah Parkin replied
Thanks Rhana – this is exactly how i imagined it would feel once you were in the water and the thick blackness and the silence – that feeling of isolation (i couldn’t do it but they come up from the water buzzing).
Benjamin Scheurer
Brilliant shot….I like the vignetting here >>> feels like tunnel vision…>>the diver has to focus<<
Deborah Parkin replied
LOL Benjamin – by the way i hate to admit it but you were right about the last image :)
willd
know the feeling well – for some reason divers do this, one of those almost masochistic pleasures!
velveteagle
I used to do this Deb.. You did a wonderful job here.. You should try it .. Under the thick ice is really weird when you crab crawl upside down looking up.
Deborah Parkin replied
Ooh i don’t know – maybe when the children are older and we are in the Great Barrier Reef or the Maldives LOL!!! No ice diving though thank you – too claustraphobic – it takes my breath away just thinking about it :)
halftone
Wow Deb, what an amazing shot, and story to go with it! Good on you for getting out there in the cold, and good on the nutter too :)
Halcyon007
Love the use of the vignette here Deb. It pulls in the eye to the claustrophic feel that it must be like 8 metres under the water. The shot feels tight and almost as though you have a divers mask on yourself. A fellow diver taking a last look at his buddy before they dive in together.
The focus again is just spot on. The subject is the diver, and as beautiful as the Lake District is, it can just blend in as background. The key feature is the diver, and all the equipment that they need to do the hobby that they do.
I love the way the water is patterned – even in it’s blurred black and white state – it still gives off the feeling of cold.
Excellent portrayal. Two hobbies and two passions collide!
dazgwen
Absolutely great and fantastic shot!!! Should be in a magazine fair dinkum!!!!
Sharon Hammond
Sensational Deb
Naomi Frost
Fabulous image, Deb – definately feeling the cloustrophobia – your processing is spot on. Wouldn’t catch me doing that – can’t see the point if you can’t see anything once you’re down there…..especially if the water is freezing. btw, I thought it said “The Driver” too…lol
Anthony Hedger
It is a fantastic shot Deborah great impact in B&W
Karen Cougan
another brilliant piece of work Deb….......well done

Graham Dean
I love the painterly effect mixed with the sharpness of outline. It gives an amazing depth in the picture. It really enhances the vulnerability and isolation you talked about.
Marion Cullen
It just amazes me how you approach the treatment of each of your images with, what seems, an innate knowledge of what will work. This is perfect, pure genius.
vonne
Great photo! He definitely looks focused. Great DOF on and your processing is awesome as always = )
gladders
Nice shot Debs…would feel like I had been burried alive…..dont think I would like it at all…..
RichardV
Excellent capture Deb..
Colin Tobin
Fantastic shot Deborah! I really love how this is composed and the vignetting can be interpreted in so many ways. I see it as representing the thoughts running through the divers head about the darkness that is soon going to engulf him.
The fact that you didn’t focus on any of the water or scenery works brilliantly.
Moth
Wonderful sport and you have to be dedicated to dive in this country especially in January.
I’ve dived all over the world and would love to try out the lakes.
Great image and gives a real sense of how alone you can feel. Even in a team.
Well done
Deborah Parkin replied
Thanks Steve – well if you are ever around Ullswater with a drysuit let me know and i can arrange it :)
sword
A great shot Deborah.I know from past experiance just how cold it can be in the lakes in winter.I need that sort of equipment just to go for a walk around the lake.Especially the breathing bottles…
Jo Fedora
Well you certainly captured the vulnerability and isolation…great use of DOf which draws the eye to the diver..great composition..
shawhouse
I love what you did with the bg as if everything has a layer over it – like a glazed doughnut. Conveys the cold like a crust over everything, wow. the light vignetting attaches it to the lens. It’s crazy cold and alien and you’ve achieved your aim beautifully. I, for one, wouldn’t let a girl of Fleur’s age do this, even for art, but you English…...
Jing3011
Has an otherworldly feel to it.
SylviaHardy
Looking at this I want to come up for air! What a picture, that stops me from breathing? Well done Deborah!
rutger
real interesting unique shot
Vedran Arnautovic
You’ve captured the moment well. I like the treatment you’ve given it as well….the image makes me cold, just how they would feel diving into those lakes
Sean Farragher
amazing capture
Mark Gardner
as though he (or she !!) is psyching themselves uo for what is to come, a friend of mine used to do this and said it was an unbelievable ‘buzz’. me, i prefer a sun lounger and a long cool drink !!
Wonderful image, you have portrayed the anticipation so well, splendid work Deb
Ken Mucke
Deb…this is really fantastic….You can almost feel the coldness of he water…Your lighting adds so much drama to an already very dramtic image…..You can sense the antisipation of the dive….brilliant
Deborah Parkin replied
Thanks Ken – means a lot to me :)
Deborah Parkin
Thanks everyone for your great comments and support – i really appreciate them :)

Awesome shot Deb! What more can I say that hasn’t been said already! ;o)
Kitsmumma
Great work Deb, this has a real forensic feel to me, I wouldn’t go down there! I always like to be able to see my feet in the water, hate dark murky water.
Martin Derksema
Diving … no way. It would be as frightening an experience to me as descending into the deep with a submarine. Yeah, you really depicted this feeling of enclosure. Such a lonely voyage into the darkness. Bit it makes a beautiful image. Love the tecture of the water: I can already see how it will close above his head. Aaargghh …
Jan Kölling
great work, compelling Image
pinkyjain

Superb shot Deborah. This is excellent
Paul Compton
Terrific.
Pal Gyomai
Amazing image, Deb! It makes me feel like something unexpected and scary thing might happen soon to the diver. Very uneasy and as Rhana said, somewhat claustrophobic effect.
You did it again!
Louise Cooke
yes, feels like you’re viewing the diver through your own mask..very clever! This has a really strong pull, and I can’t stop wondering what he’ll encounter in those inky dark depths…great sense of anticipation created Deb!
Deborah Parkin
Thanks everyone for your wonderful comments – i really so appreciate your support and encouragement.
Cinthia Creel

Arthur Chambers
once again great shot -love the way you caught him about to enter into the cold and dark lake….....
david malcolmson
This I find plain unsettling. The sense of an uninviting environment, and the extreme means required to master it, are well conveyed in this image. Great!
dcsmith82
very surreal like out of a dream
Michael Gatch
You definitely have a recognizable style. I come by your work here and there and it makes me smile every time. I love your black and white!
Really great job on this shot. the description really says it all and you did a very good job conveying that.

Wonderful image Deb, portrayed perfectly (this is nuts!!)..
As always a perfect finish and through image you tell the story perfectly.. Great work.
Mardynn
Beautiful. Just a perfect shot
Martie Venter
A very powerful and evocative image, beautiful post-processing. I like the vignetting, too – it really adds to the power of the composition. Is that ice drifting on the water? Fascinating story behind this, too – amazing that people actually do this, must be an unforgettable experience, but a little too cold (and claustrophobic) for me!
LoreLeft27
oooooohhhhhh i bet this would freeze a polar bear this is cool
Per E. Gunnarsen
Excellent shot, I like your vignettion treatment!
Globalphotos

Thank you Jean :)
Glenn Alderson
Great image! How cool is that, I would love to be there.
Birgitta
The isolation got through loud and clear. I feel almost scared just looking
at this! (I have a fear of deep waters.) I like the clarity and lighting around his head-
it draws the eye there straight away. Nice work. There’s a lonely feeling about this
that I like. And hello! ;)
NICKY7
I have done some diving well tried it i found it too claustrophobic at times .
I think they get the same thrill as sky divers do but obviously more slower and colder. You have caught a great picture
Sandra Fisher
Geat shot! You have certainly captured the atmosphere.
Pete Costick
I love the effects you have created here, great work
Richard George
