isolation
Was debating as whether or not to put this up as it felt a bit cheeky but it is an important image within my school series. This one was conceived as an idea about bullying. Thankfully I wasn’t bullied physically but I know people who were and it is terrible – it is one of my worse fears for my children too. I wanted to portray the isolation, betrayal and loneliness a child feels when they are bullied.

I was bullied, which is why my mother took me out of school when I was 14 and got me home tutored. I learnt a lot more at home than I ever had at shcool, but it wasn’t until later on that I realised that if I had of stayed in school (i.e. if I hadn’t have been bullied) then I probably would have made more friends in school, and possible still be in touch with some now. I most likely would have not gone through four years of college with essentially no friends. Basically, what I’m trying to say is that bullying effected my life more than I initially realised, and did nothing for what little confidence I have.
I was rarely physically bullied (in fact I only remember two specific occasions), but verbal abuse can be just as bad as physical abuse in the effects it can have on children.
For me this is a very interesting series as I have not seen any artwork touch on this subject before, and I can also relate to it to an extent. Keep up the good work Deborah :)
Deborah Parkin replied
I think verbal bullying is as bad as physical. Physical is humiliating but the psychological aspect lives with you. I wasn’t bullied as a child as such but as an adult (quite recently) I had an experience on my doorstep that lasted for nearly 2 years … I would cry and my husband would ask why I cared so much about them – he was right of course but I can’t change my over-sensitive nature. What I did learn though is life never stays the same – these people have moved on and I have grown because of it. I care less about what people think of me and I value those so much more who care for me regardless. As for school friends – never kept in touch – this time I moved on. I know that you will continue to evolve and grow Matt :)

Another fantastic image Deb….....That was the past you are not bullied now and we protect you :-)

Fantastic work! I was bullied in my first few years of school, and I still remember how awful it felt. This work really speaks to me. Well done.

Thank you so much RabbitHeart .. sorry to hear that must have been awful – glad this image means something :)
bdazzled
Fabulous work that will mean a lot to many of us for many different reasons.
Isolation for me was about being a child of an alchoholic father – it stole my childhood and made me a grown up far to early.
Deborah Parkin replied
so sorry to hear that – this is a story I can relate to .. although my father didn’t bring us up he was still in our lives and it could be tough .. worse still you love them so unconditionally as a child. Thanks for your honest comment – I really appreciate it.
Clare Colins

Another well executed image Deborah. I also have to say you have the most photogenic children who know exactly how to use bodylanguage, well done to you all :-))
Deborah Parkin replied
Thanks so much Sylvia – my children are wonderful. Sometimes they get fed up but it is amazing how willing there are. It is quite funny because when I was taking these pictures my husband kept shouting ‘look grumpy kids, mummy’s got the camera out’ lol!!! So we do have fun really :)
funkyfacestudio
This is wonderful Deborah ! I am witness to this everyday at the school and it is a sad thing when you see children feeling isolated both on the playground and the lunch table. I try my best to help them. You have done a wonderful job portraying this feeling.
Deborah Parkin replied
Thank you so much Lisa for your great comment – I don’t think I could work in a school to be honest – I think I would find it heartbreaking at times – thankfully people such as yourself are there to protect these kids. xx
waitin' for rain
great long perspective and point of view
Deborah Parkin replied
Thanks so much Victor – always good to hear from you.
Donald Cameron
Great concept and execution, I think this is even stronger than your “playtime” shot. The focussing and vignette really draw the eye towards the child, and this sort of b&w style really does carry the feeling of isolation.
Deborah Parkin replied
Thanks so much Donald for your really thoughtful comment – I really appreciate it.
liamcarroll
very memorable and affecting, well done
Deborah Parkin replied
Thank you so much liam for the comment and all the comments on my portfolio – I really appreciate you taking so much time :)

Great capture!
Deborah Parkin replied
Thanks so much stelo:)
GlennC
Deborah, this is one of the best images I have seen on Redbubble. I struggle to take images of people, you have turned this black and white image into a story, or a piece of art that one wants to look at over and over. In doing so more or the complex emotions are revealed. Sadness, isolation, anger and resignation are all on display.
Simply stunning.
Deborah Parkin replied
Wow thanks Glenn ..high praise indeed :) I really appreciate your comment and am so pleased that you managed to get something from this image – thank you!
DaRkSiLeNcE
Very powerful & drawing image which highlights a major issue. I love what you have done here & you’ve also enabled people to speak out. I won’t deny that it’s not an easy path that this pathway of isolation leads you down. I felt it all throughout my childhood, more often than not being beaten up & teased. Not the most pleasant & it takes a long time to get over. Perhaps by speaking out more, highlighting the issue will help to prevent this haunting issue..
An excellent capture and great depth of focus here Deborah…
Deborah Parkin replied
Thank you so much DaRkSiLeNcE .. this is such an candid response and I am really grateful to you for it. I am so sorry that you had to endure this – it must have been awful. I hope you are now living a life that is much, much happier :) Thanks once again.
OldBirch
Excellent, on all levels.
Deborah Parkin replied
Thank you OldBirch for your kind comment – really do appreciate it.
marshall calve...
Deborah, this is so moving this brings back a load of memory’s for me like you I wasn’t bullied but i could have done a bit bulling 50 plus years ago, and all I thought it was a bit of fun but now we know it’s not, our bulling was just a bit pushing and pulling not the way that we see it today.
your stunning image could and should be used by the press to highlight the problem as it doe’s this in spades. wonderful stuff
Deborah Parkin replied
Thank you marshall for you honest comment and for all the support you give to my work – I am thrilled to bits that it makes people think all sad that it happens at all. Your comment means a lot to me :)
Emma Collins
Dark and powerful but beautiful at the same time

Rosemary Scott
Isolation, betrayal and loneliness….. you’ve portrayed this so well. Once again I have an ache in my chest, & my breath shortens. I don’t think I know anyone who captures these emotions quite like you do.
Keep it up, this is such an important series.
Deborah Parkin replied
Thank you so much Rosemary – that is such a compliment and I am very flattered – I really appreciate your comment :)

very powerful image in an understated way..well conceived and beautifully shot
like it very much.
Deborah Parkin replied
Thanks Dave – means a lot :)
berndt2
great shot – beautiful composition, the sense of isolation and loneliness is completely palpable in this image. The dark undertone is there, of course, but there’s also a sense of privacy and intimacy too
Deborah Parkin replied
Thanks so much for your thoughtful comment – I like the thought of ‘privacy and intimacy’ because I think this is how you feel if you are a victim of others behaviour … :)
JimFilmer

Deborah Parkin replied
Thanks rubyred … I feel the same way.
Graham Dean
This is an amazing series Deb, what a response, it took me so long just to scroll here, I’m way past my bed time : ) I think you use your focus as brilliantly as your light. And what’s not seen hightens the impact of your artistic commentry.
Deborah Parkin replied
Thanks Graham – really pleased you like this one :)
Denzil
This series says important things about childhood and isolation and loneliness to me, but also about strength and resolve. I can relate to the loneliness articulated in this image, although I wasn’t really bullied at school (probably more a bully than a bullied, if the truth be known …), but I was lonely, and alone, and isolated, for most of my childhood … long story.
These images really resonate with me, they speak in a powerful voice to my memories. Thank you!
Deborah Parkin replied
Thank you so much Denzil for your honest comment – I hope I don’t sound patronising when I say it was brave of you to write this and gives us food for thought as to why people may bully – sometimes they are victims themselves.
CJTill
Stunning work Deb’s
Deborah Parkin replied
Thanks so much Colin :)

Peter Zentjens
Great angle, great shot,
and very, very emotive. Food for thought….
Deborah Parkin replied
Thanks Peter – so pleased you like it :)
Mike Weeks
Very powerful image. Is the victim, feeling alone and isolated or is it the bully having been excluded from playing with friends and given time to reflect on the anti social behaviour – I think it could work either way.
Deborah Parkin replied
Thanks Mike … really appreciate your comment .. and I agree could be seen both ways (which is good :))
palegirl
Blimey this brings back memories, your BW is spot on you can see this from a wee jpeg. I went to three schools and was bullied at each for having red hair and pale skin couldn’t wait to leave hoorah for work eh ?
Deborah Parkin replied
I bet you are having the last laugh – pale skin and red hair, beautiful! :) Thanks so much for you comment, really appreciate it.
Heather Rivet...
spot on
Deborah Parkin replied
Thanks so much Heather :)
Adrian Jeffs
Loving this series… the way you can make an image talk is mind blowing…. Its funny how when I was a child (still am in many ways) i was always so popular and had a lot of friends but as I get older I can totally relate to this image… If i could close my eyes and see how I feel … this image would appear…
Deborah Parkin replied
Wow Adrian what a great comment – thanks so much :) I know exactly what you mean … I think you can feel lonely when you are with memories of what was and left with what is…
Sean Farragher
